Users listening to music on the Spotify app can expect some big changes in the coming weeks.
Spotify has announced the biggest app redesign since the platform debuted over a decade ago. This includes a vertical video feed on the home page that allows users to scroll through previews of music, podcasts, and audiobooks. An all-new interactive mobile interface began rolling out to users around the world last week.
At Spotify’s Stream On event on Wednesday, showcasing new tools and programming for the app, the company unveiled its redesign. According to music streamers, the feature aims to build connections between artists and listeners and give users a more active role in discovering new music.
Gustav Cederstrom, co-president and chief product and technology officer, said: “So the most important thing we at Spotify can do for creators is to bring the distance between their art and the people who love it, or who love it as soon as they find it.”
Spotify’s new vertical homepage lets users tap to explore feeds about music, audiobooks, podcasts and shows.
Each feed allows listeners to scroll through personalized visual and audio previews of playlists, albums, podcast episodes, and audiobooks. Tap to save or share, go to the artist or podcast page, or continue listening beyond the preview. There is also a similar discovery feed using the search function.
Users can still see shortcuts to favorites and recently played items at the top of their feed.
The redesign also introduces a personalized DJ. Available to Spotify Premium users in the US and Canada, this is an AI guide that chooses what to play based on the user’s musical tastes. Smart His Shuffle is also rolling out, offering custom recommendations based on the mood of a user’s original playlist.
