Spotify has a new scheme to give you even more exposure. Unfortunately, that comes at the cost of lower loyalty.
according to billboard, the app’s new Discover mode gives artists the opportunity to reach a wider audience via Spotify Radio, which will auto-play if the artist agrees to accept a discounted rate. Streams can already pay as low as $0.0003 or $0.005, so there is debate about how low these new fees will be.
Discovery Mode was previously only available to select artists, but is now available to all artists.
Spotify claims:
“Within a month of using Discovery Mode, on average, listeners saved those songs 50% more often, added them to playlists 44% more times, and followed artists 37 times more. % increase, and these results remain strong as we scale the program.”
Some argue that this kind of exposure can be useful for artists, even though the rate is very low. Fans, of course, can buy music, merchandise, or concert tickets if they like what they hear. Even the artists you use may not be listenable.
This isn’t the first time Spotify has been accused of using its discovery feature as evidence that it’s actually trying to help artists. In 2021, Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York’s 12th District and Rep. Hank Johnson Jr. of Georgia’s 4th District wrote to Spotify founder and CEO Daniel Ek about their concerns.
“This could lead to a ‘race to the bottom’, forcing artists and labels to accept lower royalties as a necessary way to break through a very crowded and competitive music environment. I feel,” the letter said. “Depending on how the program is implemented, accepting this lower fee for this boost in Spotify’s algorithm may not guarantee more airplay if virtually all commercial artists are doing the same thing. Whether or not this helps artists is still up for debate, but given the already very low rates, it’s unlikely to hold much promise.
