If video killed the radio star, Spotify’s latest DJ update has brought him back. In late February, Spotify released an update to its platform that included his DJ feature. The feature is still in beta and only available on his mobile app, but the continued appetite for curation is already evident.
In an age of chronic personalization in nearly every aspect of modern life, the return to the desire to have a third party choose your music strikes a familiar chord. What was once the role of radio host, record store clerk, media outlet, and older brother with a vinyl collection has now evolved (or devolved) into the automatic DJ.
Last year Spotify acquired Sonatic, an AI voice platform that generates lifelike speech from text. AI DJ is Spotify’s first move to integrate its streaming platform into his platform’s infrastructure. The DJ’s voice is modeled after Spotify’s head of cultural partnerships, Xavier “X” Jernigan, who hosted “The Get Up”, Spotify’s first morning show.
The choice to model DJ’s voice after a beloved member of the company is another detail of this launch that exemplifies the current desire for individuality within engagements. Models strive to personalize the user’s listening experience.
Spotify uses listening data from users to mix new releases and old favorites together. This allows users with large music libraries to revisit forgotten tracks and artists. Users can select different moods and genres, which DJs use to fine-tune their song selection.
AI DJs may inspire people to re-engage with third parties and further personalize their tastes. For younger generations raised on streaming platforms, AI DJ introduces a previously unfamiliar third-party role. This is a spark of hope to help create a space for future curators and media outlets to move forward, and to build more detail-oriented and customizable musical experiences.
AI is no longer a vague vision of the future. Here it is — and not all need be pessimistic.
