An update on Spotify’s secret feature being tested came from a Twitter leak account named *.Check Notes* Daniel.
Oh wait, that Daniel Ek.
So yes, the news that Spotify is testing a feature called “Your Offline Mix” can be considered pretty official. Ek describes it as “a playlist designed for when you may not be online,” and added an airplane emoji to illustrate one important use case.
Of course, Spotify users have been able to download playlists for offline listening since the service’s early days. So the whole point of ‘Your Offline Mix’ is the fact that it does it automatically, giving you a ‘mix of recently played songs’ without any user interaction. Don’t forget to download the listener.
This is where Spotify catches up to its rivals for the first time. YouTube Music launched its “Smart Downloads” feature in 2019, which automatically downloads up to 500 tracks of listeners’ favorite music and keeps them always up to date when connected to Wi-Fi.
As an aside, Ek’s feature rollout is part of Spotify’s CEO stepping up his Twitter presence. Also check out this well-crafted video explaining his @eldsjal username.
