Staying online on the go has become easier in London, but your favorite podcasts and albums can get stuck in the middle if your connection is spotty.
Thankfully, Spotify is trying to solve this problem with its upcoming feature powered by recommendation technology.
As part of the update, the music streaming service essentially creates an automatic playlist of recently played songs for you to listen to offline. This means that your tracks should be available regardless of whether you have an internet or mobile data connection.
Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has tweeted that the company is testing a new feature that will almost certainly be released soon.
Best of all, the new collection should keep you entertained for a while. In the screenshot Ek shared, his “Your Offline Mix” playlist is 3 hours and 31 minutes long.
The photo also included the following description: “A mix of recently played songs to use when wine is high but connection is low.”
It may sound innovative, but Spotify isn’t the first music streaming service to offer this feature. The difference lies in YouTube Music. Currently available to subscribers only, YouTube Music offline mixtapes are automatically saved to your device between 1 and 100 songs.
How to Download Music from Spotify for Offline Listening
While waiting for Spotify’s new features, nothing prevents you from downloading music to your phone anyway.
Like YouTube Music, this option is only available to premium users who have paid for Spotify, but free users can also download podcasts. There is currently no way to download individual tracks, but you can put them in a playlist first and download that instead.
To listen to music online, simply navigate to the one you want to save and tap the download button (down arrow).
A circular bar will appear as the download progresses, and the icon will turn green when complete.
If the download fails for some reason, you can tap “Refresh” to try again.
Downloads can be deleted manually by pressing the same green arrow or using the storage option in settings.
By default, Spotify only downloads audio over the internet, as downloading over 4G or 5G zaps a lot of data. However, you can enable mobile data downloads by tapping the gear icon on the home page and going to settings.
Then scroll down to “Audio Quality” and under Downloads, turn on “Download Using Mobile Data”.
