Want to hear more on Spotify? Because Spotify offers just that with the new Discovery Mode.
reported that billboard, Spotify’s new Discover mode gives artists the chance to get in front of a wider audience via Spotify Radio and auto-play at discounted royalty rates. It’s not clear how much it will cost, but given Spotify’s low fees for regular streams (about $0.003 to $0.005), it’s hard to imagine a worse version.
Discovery Mode is available to all artists on the Spotify for Artists website, but was previously only available to some artists. According to Spotify itself, “On average, within the first month of using Discovery Mode, listeners are 50% more likely to save those songs, 44% more likely to add them to playlists, and more likely to find artists We found that people follow 37% more often, and these results remain strong even as we scale the program.”
The problem here is this. Spotify has a lot of music, and a good portion of it is barely listened to. So if all artists start using the Discover Mode feature and over 100,000 tracks are uploaded every day, how likely is it that this will actually help? It’s a much smaller sample size that you haven’t even defined. How big will the pool grow once everyone has access to it?
Certainly, it would be great to be in front of more listeners. Maybe we’re being overly pessimistic about the whole thing and that’ll actually help some artists. And when inflation is running high, touring is expensive, and it’s already difficult to make a living as an artist, it’s very difficult to get excited about her declining royalty rates.
Concerns about Discovery Mode go back to at least 2021. Jerry Nadler out of 12th New York area and Hank Johnson Jr. of 4th The Georgia District wrote to Spotify’s founder and CEO Daniel About pay cuts.
“This could lead to a ‘race to the bottom’, forcing artists and labels to accept lower royalties as a necessary way to break through a very crowded and competitive music landscape. “I feel that,” reads part of the letter. There are further concerns that we may not even be able to guarantee more airplay.”
Oh, and Spotify has also updated its app to allow infinite scrolling of the homepage, making it look very much like TikTok.
