Spotify has announced that it will be dropping Heardle, an interactive musical guessing game inspired by Wordle.
It comes less than a year after the company purchased the song-named game last July.
Heardle plays short bursts of mystery tracks and asks the user to guess the song as quickly as possible.
A spokesperson said, “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to say goodbye.
Spotify added that it will “focus on other features for music discovery.”
When I bought the game last year, the music streaming service wanted it to be a “tool for music discovery.”
However, fans soon began to complain. Problems with app access and game stats were part of the problem.
Like Wordle, this game has become a daily routine for many music lovers.
According to SimilarWeb stats, 41 million people visited Heardle’s web pages before making a purchase.
So what went wrong?
Daryl Baxter, author of iMore and technology journalist, said he was not surprised to see Heardle removed.
He feels his initial decision was a “panic buy” and was inspired by the January 2022 acquisition of Wordle by The New York Times.
“They saw it as probably the next big thing, but unfortunately it fell prematurely,” he told Newsbeat.
One reason it’s not working, Darryl says, could be how it works (or doesn’t work) with the app Spotify.
“Heardle is not well integrated. [Spotify] You cannot compete with your friends.you have to use the web [to access it].
“I feel like Spotify fell short of their mark because it feels like an easy win.”
The difference from Wordle’s publication in the New York Times is also apparent, says Daryl.
“The stats carried over, the winning streak carried over, and they promised to make sure the service was under control.
“But it has a very famous crossword section, so it’s a natural fit.”
Daryl feels that for an app to be successful, it needs to have a “simple design.”
“You need something that appeals to all ages and has a unique hook. You need something that grabs the user’s attention and makes them want to hit the download or buy button,” he says.
“But it also requires forward-thinking, like figuring out how to integrate the app with apps like Apple Music, TikTok, Facebook, and Twitter.”
It’s unclear at this time if Heardle will continue to exist elsewhere, and is scheduled to close on May 5th.
