Supporting student podcasters
SPOTIFY, which is expanding its NextGen program of college podcasting programs to historically black colleges and universities, kicked off SPELMAN COLLEGE’s NextGen program at the NextGen Creator Day event in Atlanta on Monday (3/20).
SPELMAN offers a custom curriculum on podcasting developed in collaboration with SPELMAN’s Dr. MICHELLE HITE and other faculty members and SPOTIFY’s SoundUp team. Five of her SPELMAN freshmen who are interested in careers in audio media will receive a multi-year $10,000 scholarship for their sophomore, junior and senior year. The week-long SPOTIFY Labs Creator Program trains aspiring podcasters using the SPOTIFY FOR PODCASTERS (formerly her ANCHOR) platform.
NIKEMA WILLIAMS Congressman (D-GA), who attended the event, said: “SPOTIFY comes in when a lot of people say they want to support her HBCU, but they step up and do it.”
“We have over 50 students who have already reported creating their own podcasts, and more than twice as many students have expressed early interest in a career in the audio industry,” said Dr. HITE. “These figures were not surprising to me, as SPELMAN students routinely demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of the importance of storytelling as a necessary companion to investing in social justice. Our students appreciate storytelling as a means to expand how people confront the possibilities of how they can imagine and think about Black lives. This partnership with SPOTIFY gives them the opportunity to develop their interests and learn how to specialize.”
Dr. HITE adds: “We were able to establish oral history in the classroom. In doing so, we expanded the register for listening to investigative environments that reflected what Black people think about Black children and other Black people. Love , RESPECT, AND EXPLORATION.SPOTIFY has dedicated partners who understand the importance of our purpose and are adept at storytelling that includes the richness of this landscape of Black life, and how we communicate it. It can guide us in recovering parts of the story we didn’t know…or capture what we went through in a profound way.”
SPOTIFY says: KRISTIN JARRETT HER IN EQUITY & IMPACT LEADER. “But this is just the beginning. Going forward, we hope to expand her NextGen program on SPOTIFY to more of his HBCU campuses.”
