Spotify faces criticism over its controversial streaming platform’s discovery mode expansion. CEO Daniel Ek announced the plans at the company’s Stream On event on March 8.
Discovery mode is basically trading. It gives artists the opportunity to publish more algorithms in exchange for lower royalties. This new expansion will give independent artists access to a system previously only available to record labels using the Spotify for Artists tool.
Some call it “digital payola,” but Spotify claims the program is useful if you’re trying to discover artists. “On average, users save Discovery Mode songs 50% more often, add them to playlists 44% more often, and follow artists 37% more often. It’s what you’ll see in the first month of ,” said Joe Hadley, Global Head of Artist Partnerships and Audiences.
