Audio streaming service Spotify has hinted at possible support for AirPlay 2 starting in 2021. Apple offers his own AirPlay connectivity, but Spotify hasn’t jumped to support AirPlay 2.
AirPlay 2, launched in 2018, includes improved audio buffering and the ability to stream music to multiple devices simultaneously.
Spotify says it “will remain committed to AirPlay 2 at some point in the future.” However, the company told Bloomberg’s Marc Garman that it hasn’t provided a specific timeline or release date for support.
The announcement follows user complaints about Spotify’s lack of support for Apple’s HomePod product.
In 2019, Spotify accused Apple of engaging in anti-competitive behavior. For example, Apple says it’s blocking Spotify’s support for its HomePod product. It’s been three years and despite support being fully available on Spotify, no steps have been taken to introduce compatibility with HomePod.
Support for AirPlay 2 is still in progress, but at this time Spotify has no plans to provide an update that includes HomePod support.
