Kristen Anderson-Lopez & Robert Lopez Talk
Screen Rant: If you could express your innermost feelings in a musical number, who would you want to sing it?
Kristen Anderson-Lopez: Oh, that’s great. that’s a great question. Well, my inner thoughts aren’t always soothing. It will be like singing
Robert Lopez: Probably Mandy Patinkin screaming.
well you wrote first to this point As a game, right?
Kristen Anderson-Lopez: It was originally a live musical, but it was a completely different story and I could only see the male protagonist’s thoughts. But we brought in Steven Levenson and Daniel Sanchez Witzel who completely revamped the story. Right now, you’re hearing the thoughts of both female and male protagonists.
How does it feel to come back after all these years and turn a musical into a Hulu show?
Robert Lopez: We love Broadway musicals, but we also love television and always wanted to be on a TV show, so it was a lot of fun. To be able to pull it off with this team and get what we love about a streaming series, an 8 episode arc and musical number and more people seeing it It was just a pleasure. It was nice to revisit some themes like “Can you really know someone?”
It’s a fun question to ask, but it keeps me busy for quite some time because I feel so small and really lonely. On the other hand, when I was puzzled earlier, I think I realized that you can never fully know someone. I can never fully know Kristen and vice versa. We can spend the rest of our marriage basically seeing each other. I think this is a really romantic idea.
As an EP, how involved were you in planning the season? Was there any part of the original that you wanted to keep?
Kristen Anderson-Lopez: As an EP, we’ve been involved in every layer of this whole effort. Honestly, it was like going to graduate school in television. Most people don’t have a first real job doing all the things on TV, but we helped crack the story and worked to pitch the story. Songwriting [and] We were on every set of those songs. Stephen Levenson was just as involved every day and was involved in choosing where to put the songs and some of those slots. We all had the best time diving into all aspects of creating this new hybrid of musical and streaming series – a comprehensive 16 hours a day.
Will you include songs from the original musical, or will it be a completely new soundtrack?
Robert Lopez: It’s a fairly new soundtrack, but we’ve taken some songs and completely rewrote them. So some of the DNA is there, but not much.
frozen The music remains decidedly iconic. Do you happen to be making more Arendelle songs in some way?
Kristen Anderson-Lopez: I heard Frozen 3 is in the works and I’m planning on cooking it soon. We look forward to starting the next chapter.
Do you have a favorite number you wrote for the series?
Robert Lopez: I have to say my favorite is the song “I Am Not Alone”. Because he’s alone in the bathroom and he sings about falling in love. You can see the big romantic spirit this guy has, but he’s still trying. To play cool in real life. To me it’s funny. How hilarious it is to have someone’s big feelings you don’t share.
Kristen Anderson-Lopez: I love “The Truth Is” in Episode 7. And ultimately, as you grow up, at any given time, some people go through it early on, some people go through it later, there is a moment when you have to say, ‘I’m not going to do it. I can write stories about myself. I can determine what the truth is, and it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks. , poured a lot of that emotion into the song.
