Singer-songwriter Skylar Gudas released “Mother’s Daughter” this week as a tribute to her mother, Southern Shores’ Sally Andrews Gudas.

Carefully timed to be released the week of Mother’s Day, the song is a rich yet playful song that shares wisdom and sayings Skyler has gleaned from her mother. [absence makes the heart grow, yes / fonder of someone else]grandmother [throw a little salt over your shoulder]and other loved ones.

“This song is about the voice of wisdom within you that encourages and drives you,” said the Durham-based performer. “So is our relationship with the Earth, Mother Earth. All those natural wonders.”

“Mother’s Daughter” is the single from Gudash’s soon to be titled third album, which he is currently working on. Debuted with full album in 2016 oleanderfollowed by cinema in 2020.

But she was singing long before that. longer.

“The first words I spoke were sung,” Skyler said. “I’ve been singing all my life.”

“She loves words,” added her mother. “She always loved writing short stories, and that still runs through her lyrics today,” she said.

Like many music artists during the pandemic, Skyler also found herself with canceled shows and empty calendars. She and her brother spent a lot of time with her family in their flat-roofed cottage in Southern Shores, hearing stories of the 1970s when her mother was on a fishing team called Queen Mackerel.

“It has a lot to do with her memories of her childhood. My brother is more of a fisherman than I am,” she admitted. Seeing her like that made her want to see it on camera. ”

The video for her new single includes a scene of her mother fishing off the Southern Shores shoreline.

You say you love Sally, fish (“I don’t catch A lot”), she spent her summers in North Carolina teaching kids how to saltwater fish and how to love the “outdoors.”

“Mother’s Daughter” teases and surprises. The sound is gentle and deep, but reading the lyrics and watching the music video adds an element of humor and curiosity to the song.

Skyler alludes to the imagery of salt throughout, paying homage to the lyrics about putting salt on your shoulders, the Morton’s Salt girls, and sea salt.

“She takes quite a few chances in life,” Sally said of her daughter.

While a theater student at UNC Chapel Hill, Skylar worked at a jet ski rental shop in the Outer Banks, a local surf shop, and sang in the Lost Colony choir, just like her mother did decades ago. There was also

“One of my favorite things in the world is singing harmonies with my daughter. It’s really great,” Sally said.

This part of the music video was shot by James Crower, director of photography and Outer Banks local. This scene is calm and quiet, in contrast to the vibrant and colorful scene that preceded it.

There is a sense of character solidarity that a mother gives to her daughter in this scene. She is down to earth and happy. And that was her legacy that her daughter inherited, freeing her from being a “summer wild child.”
