Last month, the Statesboro Fire Department was notified that the Federal Emergency Management Agency had awarded a $2.1 million SAFER grant to hire 12 new firefighters. In addition to the approved positions that the Statesboro City Council will fund this fiscal year, the department is currently seeking to fill 19 positions.
So Fire Chief Tim Grams decided to try something new to recruit firefighters. The Statesboro Fire Department conducts open interviews with anyone interested in joining the Fire Department.
“This is the first time our department has conducted public interviews,” Grams said. “Our goal is to provide people interested in firefighter positions with ample opportunities to come at a time that suits their schedule.”
According to Grams, interview sessions are scheduled for Wednesday and Friday, and will eventually be scheduled for Wednesday, April 12th.
Interviews and physical agility tests will be available on a first-come, first-served basis on these dates from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and from 2:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

SAFER Grant
The $2,108,938 Appropriate Fire and Emergency Response Staffing Award, announced February 9, covers 100% of salaries and benefits for 12 firefighters for three years.
“12 will certainly have a big impact and provide a very useful resource for the delivery of fire services,” Grams said last month. “This will give him enough manpower to put 20 people on each of the three shifts, and eventually he will be able to increase the number of firefighters on each unit at any time.”
The all-professional Statesboro Fire Department operates four fire departments from two fire stations. One for each of the three regular fire trucks, plus a “tower company” for big trucks with aerial towers and buckets. Each requires his three shifts of 24 and 48 hours.
“Where those 12 people come from is that we can get four additional people per shift across the four companies that we operate, and as this community grows, we can grow more. We’re well positioned, and we’ve seen a ton of growth to meet that growth need,” said Grams.
The SAFER grant enabled SFD to expand its fleet of licensed frontline firefighters from 48 to 60.
“One of our top priorities right now is recruiting and hiring, and filling those vacancies with the best possible candidates,” Grams said in February.
