Teenage singer-songwriter Mason Whittle is becoming a familiar face on the Huddersfield gig circuit…and now he’s released a six-track EP on music-streaming giant Spotify.
The 16-year-old didn’t start playing guitar until he was 13, and the last three years have been amazing.
He taught himself to play guitar, started singing, then songwriting, and is currently studying to achieve his ambitions of a career in music.
Mason started out busking, but was given his first break to perform at Slicethwaite’s Northern Soul Cafe and never looked back.
The first song he learned was Queen’s Love Of My Life, and Mason can now play dozens of cover versions, from The Beatles to George Ezra.
Linthwaite’s Mason dropped out of Colne Valley High School last summer and is currently studying a two-year BTEC Diploma in Musical Performance at Leeds City College.
He often gigs around the Colne Valley and is becoming a favorite among visiting Yale trailers. Some in Manchester saw him perform at his pub on Marsden’s Railway in early March, so Oasis and Stone. , sent off to song heaven.
Mason’s EP is called Color Schemes and features six songs: Titanic, I Want You To Be Mine, Night Ends, Yet, Kites and The Love For You.
Mason reveals that ‘I Want You To Be Mine’ was inspired by the Meatloaf classic ‘Two Out Of Three Ain’t Bad’.
he said: I was trying to figure out the guitar part he played and went to the 10th fret with a capo and tried it. Then I started strumming faster, straying from Meatloaf songs and gradually came up with songs, so I started moving away from songs. ”
This is how Mason does much of his songwriting. He starts with a song he knows and then it turns into something else entirely.
Night Ends – the track from the most-heard EP on Spotify – was inspired by American Idol runner-up Alejandro Aranda, known by his stage name Scarypoolparty, and specifically his song called 10 Years.
Mason says:
It is a fingerstyle playing method in which the strings are strummed rather than just plucked.
Another song on the EP, Kites, is about Mason growing up and leaving childhood behind, encouraging people to enjoy their childhood.
The Love For You was inspired by Ed Sheeran’s Perfect and Eric Clapton’s Wonderful Tonight, but some may hear shades of Clifford T Ward’s Nightingale.
The EP was recorded at Vibrations Studios on Crosland Moore.
Mason said:
“I want the sound to be just right, so I repeat the recording so that it sounds in the car as it does when listening through headphones.”
Mason has quite a few private party bookings this month and will be playing at Junction One pub in Scar Lane, Golcar on Saturday 25th March at 7pm.
We will be back on the railroad in Marsden on Saturday 22nd April from 3pm to 6pm. Next day, Sunday April 23rd at 4pm at The Little Bridge Bar in Sliceweight and Friday April 28th at 7:30pm at the Fourth Fiend Taphouse in Meltham.
Mason lives with Mark, his mother, Lisa, and his 21-year-old sister, Emily.
