The San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra will honor the music of Thelonious Monk and John Coltrane with the Joshua White Ensemble on May 20 at 7:30 p.m. at the San Bernardino Valley College Auditorium.
The program is part of the Symphony Orchestra Chamber series supervised by Anthony Pernser, Symphony Orchestra Music Director and Conductor.
“Following last year’s popularity, which focused on Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, we are thrilled to organize a new concert centered around the legendary musical thinking of John Coltrane and Thelonious Monk. Bringing the great Joshua White to San Bernardino was a real smash hit for our organization and we couldn’t have asked for more to feature in such a technically challenging concert. Man is inconceivable,” Panther said in a news release.
Thelonious Sphere Monk (1917-1982) was an American jazz pianist and composer whose work influenced the standard jazz repertoire. John William Coltrane (1926-1967) was an American jazz saxophonist, bandleader and composer. Coltrane and Monk briefly collaborated on albums such as 1961’s Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane, which was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2007.
The members of the Joshua White Ensemble are pianist Joshua White, plus bassist Karl Macomas Reichl. Mark Farber, drums. Dwight Tribble, vocals. Josh Johnson, alto sax. And Chris Speed, tenor sax and clarinet.
Tickets are $20-$100 and $15 for students and active duty military members. For tickets and information, visit sanbernardinosymphony.org or call 909-381-5388.
The San Bernardino Valley College Auditorium is located on the San Bernardino Valley College campus at 701 South Mount Vernon Avenue, San Bernardino. There is a free, well-lit parking lot directly opposite the venue, doors open at 6pm.
