ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese said: unstable Co-creator and star Rob Lowe talks about the Netflix comedy series now available for streaming. The actor discussed working with his son John Owen Lowe and his co-star Fred Armisen.
The synopsis for the series reads, “A biological research company, a socially troubled son is forced to work for his father’s company. The father is a very eccentric and eccentric man who saves him from disaster.” It is written
Tyler Treese: Ellis is dealing with grief after the death of his wife and trying to connect with his son when he realizes he doesn’t really know. How important was it for both your character and the series to have that emotional core? It makes the comedy hit harder and it’s all very impactful.
Rob Lowe: thank you! i love to hear that. Because I wanted this comedy to be a companion piece to the kind of comedy I love. developmental arrest, office, 30 rockbut especially like developmental arrest — Their vanity is that the family lost money [and] Dad may go to jail. First we need a hook to give it some kind of grounding and relevance. The concept of a family trying to get out of trauma or loss [a] wife [and] My mother felt it was a really good way to do it. I have to give credit to Victor Fresco, who was a co-creator along with John Owen and myself. It was his idea and it was really good.
I’ve always loved the timing and delivery of your comedy and it’s at its best on Unstable. Is it natural for you? What is the process you go through when trying to find the best way to conduct a dialogue?
The funny thing is, after years of doing it, I can stop overthinking it and trust my instincts to get out of my way and make it happen. The moment you think of it and get involved in making it, it dies. But it’s very difficult to walk on set and get to a place where you feel comfortable with everything happening without any preconceived notions. . It just comes with time. I’ve spent time in the saddle, learned to trust myself, learned from the heroes I’ve worked with, and learned a lot from the great comedians I’ve worked with.
I love how your son John Owen gives a great performance on this show. You must be so proud. But when you work with him, can you separate being his father from treating him like any other actor? Or is it always there?
It goes back and forth and is super trippy. I will be working with him on a scene. Is he really saying that? Oh no no no That’s dialogue, yes. It’s just dialogue. ’ Or I’d finish the scene and then get together with the director and talk about how the take went and he would give his input and I’d be like, ‘Yeah, that guy is really smart. Wait a minute..that’s mine…that’s John Owen!I changed his diaper! Now he’s telling me he wants another take?So it’s really, really weird but in the nicest, nicest way possible.
ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke with Unstable co-creator and star John Owen Lowe and star Sian Clifford about Netflix…
You talk about some of the great comedians you’ve worked with and your scene with Fred Armisen is very hilarious on this show. What were his characteristics as a comedy scene partner?
oh my god. So if I had to make a list of my favorite comedians who specialize in different characters, Fred would definitely be at the top.Dana Carvey would certainly have been there historically too. It was a dream to get Fred. When I asked him, he said, “Please, please, please!” I don’t know if he does that. So he’s the Babe Ruth of this. And he immediately said yes. What he brought to the show is incredible. That relationship is one of my favorites on the show. Working with him is a dream. I’m having a hard time keeping up with him, but it’s the best.
