Russian President Vladimir Putin announced Saturday plans to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in neighboring Belarus.
Putin said the plan was in response to Britain’s decision last week to provide Ukraine with armor-piercing ammunition containing depleted uranium. Russia falsely claimed that these rounds contained nuclear components.
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has long demanded weapons, Putin said in an interview with Russian state television.
He said the construction of the Belarusian weapons storage facility will be completed by July 1.
Russia uses Belarusian territory as a staging ground to send troops to Ukraine, and Moscow and Minsk maintain close military ties.
