Prince Andrew may have made his disastrous Newsnight interview to help daughter Beatrice

Prince Andrew may have made a harrowing appearance for Newsnight to help his daughter Princess Beatrice, his interviewer Emily Maitlis said yesterday.

The Duke of York brought his eldest daughter into behind-the-scenes negotiations with the BBC team behind the interview, journalist Miss Maitlis and producer Sam McAllister.

Miss Maitlis said at the time she thought she might have agreed to talk to her now-husband, Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, to reconcile with her recently engaged daughter.

She said in the Channel 4 documentary, “It’s the first time the thought crossed my mind that he might be doing it for her.

“Your life has been hell. You had to read these headlines. You’re about to get married. I’m going to do this to make it better for you.” I don’t know if that’s true, but it crossed my mind.

Producer Miss McAllister said the Duke had announced he had brought someone to the negotiations, and said he thought he was a lawyer.

Miss McAllister previously explained that Beatrice took notes on a clipboard at a meeting and “looked concerned.”

The princess is set to star in a new Netflix drama detailing the preparations for the Duke of New York’s Newsnight interview, reports The Telegraph.

Actress Charity Wakefield will play Beatrice in the scoop, which stars Gillian Anderson as Emily Maitlis, Rufus Sewell as Prince Andrew and Billie Piper as BBC-produced Sam McAllister.

The film follows Sam McAllister’s book, which managed to scoop a shocking interview about Prince Andrew with Jeffrey Epstein that is widely believed to have backfired.

Ms McAllister revealed the role of Beatrice in an interview for ITV This Morning, two years after the Newsnight interview aired.

She said: “The only thing worse than telling a prospective interviewee about allegations of sexual misconduct or sex with a 17-year-old girl is having to do it in front of his daughter. only.”
