Police swarmed the Oakland area of Pittsburgh on Wednesday after a shooter was called.
They quickly learned the shooter’s call wasn’t true, but confirmed that both Oakland and Central Catholic High School were safe, according to Pittsburgh police. Great care was taken at each school in
“Within a minute, we were notified that there were no active shooters in Central Catholic,” said Deputy Pittsburgh Police Chief Thomas Stangrecki.
As a precautionary measure, the Pittsburgh Police Department enlisted the assistance of several agencies. Some of them included the Allegheny County Sheriff’s Department, Port Authority Police, State Police, ATF, and FBI. Their first step was to clear Central Catholic and move room by room.
“There were no active shooters. There were no injured students trapped in place,” Stangrecchi said.
Just as they were finishing this, they received a call of an active shooter threat at Oakland Catholicism. Students and staff headed across the street to St Paul’s Cathedral, many of them escorted by heavily armed police.
Many students expressed their feelings for the trauma of the event.
“We treated it as a real incident. We were ready to confront active gunmen in the building,” Stangrecchi said.
They worked to reunite students from both schools with their families after they cleared Auckland Catholic.
“Our greatest assets are our children. We must keep them safe. We must continue to work together to make sure that happens,” Gainey said. .
