A day to celebrate the beauty of records is set for this weekend, with the usual long lines outside the city’s independent music shops.
Record Store Day is the highlight of the year for music fans, a chance to indulge your passion and pick up some bargains. This global event puts our prized independent record shop in the spotlight and is often a welcome boost for business.
A special vinyl will be released for the day only, and many shops including Newcastle’s JG Windows will be hosting in-store performances. The first event of its kind took place in his April 2008, and now stores around the world join in celebrations for record store staff, customers and artists.

The official release, scheduled for Record Store Day this Saturday, includes Sam Fender’s Wild Gray Ocean/Little Bull of Bryce and a 1975 live recording with the BBC Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. There are performances available on LP, cassette and CD. Works by artists from Ringo Starr to Dolly Parton, Ocean Color Scene to David Bowie and many more, available in stores on a first-come, first-served basis. . .
More than 260 UK independents are expected to attend the day this year, and record sales are said to have hit a 30-year high. Newcastle has a strong reputation as an independent record shop that is always willing to participate.
The Record Store Day website features several stores around Newcastle that have signed up on April 22nd. Among them, all-time favorite JG Windows in the Central Arcade will host three of his cracking live music performances in a special Saturday event.
To kick-start the party mood, fun-rock blazes at noon in downtown Leicester Brown, prog-rock and metal at 1pm at the Midnight Jazz Club, and Beth Macari turns soulful at 2pm. There will also be a music quiz and visitors have a chance to win JG Windows vouchers.
Another city store that celebrates the day is RPM Music in Old George Yard. Vinyl Guru on Westgate Road; Reflections of Nuns Quarter; Beyond Vinyl at the John Marley Center at Mascot Grove and Beatdown Records at Clarendon House on Bewick Street. Then, across town, we also celebrate Hot Rats Records in Waterloo Place, Sunderland and Sound It Out Records in Yarm Street, Stockton.
