(CNN) The Tennessee plane crash that killed the Christian diet guru and six others in 2021 was said to have caused the pilot to “due to spatial disorientation,” according to a report filed Wednesday by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board. It was caused by losing control of the plane during the climb.
Nutritionist Gwen Shamblin Lara, her husband, actor William J. Lara, her son-in-law Brandon Hannah, and husband and wife Jennifer and David Martin, Jessica and Jonathan Walters, arrived at Smyrna Airport. I was on a Cessna 501 taking off from On May 29, 2021, I headed to Palm Beach, Florida.
Shortly after takeoff, the plane crashed into Percy Priest Lake in the community of Smyrna near Nashville, killing all on board.
According to the NTSB report, flight-tracking data revealed that the aircraft entered the clouds, underwent a series of heading changes and several climbs and descents before beginning a sharp downward left turn. became.
This movement is consistent with a form of spatial disorientation known as the weight force illusion, which states that “acceleration with increasing airspeed of an airplane causes the nose It was likely perceived by the pilots as raising ,” the report said.
According to the Federal Aviation Administration, this kind of disorientation usually occurs when pilots have “unreliable or unavailable external visual references.” The pilot “probably did not use the instruments effectively during takeoff and climb,” the NTSB report notes.
Investigators said the pilot may have believed the plane was nose-up rather than nose-down and could not recover after the plane began to fall with high acceleration. The plane then crashed into a shallow reservoir in the lake at high speed, according to the NTSB.
Approximately two-thirds of the wreckage of the aircraft was subsequently recovered, including both engines, the main cabin door, fragments of the main cabin window, and several damaged seat frames. . The recovered wreckage showed no signs of mechanical problems, according to reports.
Gwen Shamblin Lara was the founder and spiritual leader of the Remnant Fellowship Church in Brentwood, south of Nashville. A registered dietitian, she created a “weight loss diet” that encourages dieters to strengthen their faith in God to lose weight.
Her husband, who went by the name Joe Lara, was an actor best known for playing the lead role in the 1996-1997 TV series Tarzan: Epic Adventures.
Walters and Martin joined the Remnant Fellowship Church in the late 1990s, according to the church’s website. Hannah helped oversee a youth group at the church.
After the crash, the church released a statement, remembering the victims as “some of the nicest, most loving people I’ve ever met.”
