SAN DIEGO — When Gov. Gavin Newsom visited San Diego this weekend as part of his statewide tour, CBS 8 had the opportunity to speak with California Senator Protem Toni Atkins. A San Diego research vessel docked at Point Her Loma.
This included California’s response to a federal court decision outside Texas that could ban the widely used abortion drug mifepristone at the national level.
“This is an attack on our healthcare,” Newsom said, adding that this pending court ruling was “predetermined.”
Newsom said he hopes the judge’s decision will be immediately put on hold as the appeals process progresses.
“In the meantime, we’re going to do more to make sure we’re not only serving California, but we’re here for people,” he added. But please feel our duty to those across the country who fear for their lives, health and safety, and we will be there to protect them.”
He also pointed to California’s move to codify the right to reproductive liberty into its constitution.
“It’s a California value. We respect the right to privacy, and that includes abortion and contraception,” Sen. Atkins told CBS 8.
On the SDG&E-suggested rate hike that infuriated so many Sandiegans, CBS 8 told the governor of Sandiegan that the California Public Utilities Commission, which he appoints, will consider rate payers when making a final decision. “Otherwise, they’re not on that committee,” Newsom replied.
“We’re seeing these continued increases, and we’re looking at everything on a case-by-case basis in a very organized and thorough process,” Newsom said. .”
As part of its statewide tour, Newsom has also focused on tackling the homeless crisis.
“Walk the streets and sidewalks,” he said. “What is happening is unacceptable. We hear you, we see you…we understand it!”
One of the new statewide strategies is the CARE Court. It provides court-ordered treatment for some Californians, including many homeless people suffering from severe mental illness.
San Diego has volunteered to pilot the program starting this fall, but some critics question it as a trampling on civil liberties.
“We are now on the verge of restructuring a new way of thinking about engagement,” Newsom said. We expect more in terms of accountability, and that’s what the CARE Court is about.”
“It’s about families who can’t even help their loved ones because they can’t go through a system where they can really care for their loved ones,” Atkins added. “Their hands are tied.”
Newsom also announced a new initiative to build hundreds of new tiny homes across California to get more people off the streets more quickly while they wait for permanent housing.
“We’re trying to offer more choice, more options,” he added. Please take it out.”
San Diego County will receive 150 of these new tiny homes, at least initially.
Newsom also says that number could easily grow well beyond that, given how quickly these structures can be built and how cheaply they can be manufactured. .
