The Nokona Lady Indians won their Second District game against 1A St. Joe at home on a chilly Monday night.
The Lady Indians beat the smaller Lady Panthers, 12-2, by run rule after five innings.
Nocona had suffered tough losses in their last two games and their defense was not as healthy as they needed to stay in the game.
The young Lady Panthers have tried to keep their heads above the water and focus on the positives beyond the final score in the last two weeks of games.
St. Joe took the lead and thanks to a catcher’s interference with two outs, they were able to get Taylor Patrick on base, but he was unavailable.
Nocona jumped to score early. After Reagan Phipps tied the bases with his one out, Lady Indians’ top hitter Toby Cable hit a home run that cleared the fence to put the Lady Indians in multiple runs.
Nocona added to it when the next batter, Avery Kurtzinger, hit a deep ball to right field. Thanks to his problems fielding the ball and getting it into the infield, Kurtzinger was able to go home to hit a solo on a Park home run to put the Lady Indians up 3–0.
St. Joe pitcher Maxie Johnson was able to bounce back. After Sky Kirby hit a double to put him in scoring position, St. Joe grounded out with two outs. With Kirby on third base, Johnson struck out the next batter.
The Lady Panthers answered twice. Kayden Skidmore hit a single with one out. After a fielder doubled at second base, Presley-Dewes singled to get two runners on base.
After both advanced to second and third base on double steals, Neve Aspam hit the ball into center field, causing a defensive error and allowing both runners to score.
St. Joe cut the lead to 3-2 before the next batter lined up Nocona pitcher Phipps.
The Lady Indians returned firing in the attack. Evelyn Marquez leads with a double. Her sacrifice her bunt moved her to third base and Abbey Hill drove her home on a bunt that managed to reach her first base.
After Hill stole second base, Phipps traded places with her on the double. Cable then hit a triple to drive Phipps and Krusinger hit a double to drive in Cable to extend the Lady Indians’ lead to 7-2.
Nocona tried to score more with one out, but St. Joe’s ground ball to second base was the first out and was immediately thrown by the catcher and out at the plate, ending the second inning with a double play.
Reagan Wilson went on base for the Lady Panthers and singled out. Unfortunately for St. Joe, the next three batters were retired by Nocona’s defense and Phipps on the mound.
The Lady Indians were looking to extend their lead, but Dennis DeLeon walked the ball with one out and St. Joe’s Johnson struck out two batters to induce a groundout to advance the game to the fourth inning. I had no luck.
Bailey Nobile walked the Lady Panthers with one out, but Nocona’s Phipps struck out the next two batters to prevent scoring opportunities.
Hill singled to lead the Lady Indians.
After a fielder pick at second base, Cable hit his second two-run homer, which cleared the fence in left field.
Krusinger then hit a single before being driven home with a double by Kirby to put Nokona’s score at 10-2.
St. Joe fought back and was able to retire the next two batters to catcher and shortstop on groundouts to end the fourth inning.
The Lady Panthers attempted to make a two-out rally with Patrick drawing a walk and Johnson singled to put a runner in the corner. Nocona’s Phipps was then able to induce a shallow line drive to third base with three outs.
The Lady Indians needed only two more runs to end the game, with both Marquez and Katie Barrett singles to start the inning.
Walker came in to run for Barrett. After Marquez stole second base, she scored on a passed ball and Walker advanced to third base. allowed Walker to go home for the game-ending run.
Nokona won 12-2.
