Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has taken the world by storm. James Gunn Join the beloved misfits as they return to the MCU for one final ride against a new villain, High Evolution. One of the many highlights of this movie is its sense of scale. The sets, characters, and threats are huge. But the film never loses sight of what shocks us most: the emotional weight we carry on this journey.
talk to the actors Miriam Scholl (Recorder Vim) and Nico Santos (Recorder Teal), they revealed just how epic the stage was for Gunn’s last MCU project. Actors who serve as two of His Evolution’s right-hand men play key roles in the film, recounting some of the film’s defining moments. The two talked about the differences between Marvel Studios work and their previous experiences, as well as the differences in working with Marvel Studios. Chris Pratt (Star Lord) and Chukwudi Iwuji (advanced evolution).
Mike Thomas: Thank you both for joining us today. It was a wonderful trip with the Guardians. I really enjoyed this movie and your work on it, so congratulations on your release this week. For both of you, this is your first experience with the MCU. How is it different from your previous works? I know the scope and scale of the Marvel Cinematic Universe can be a little daunting, but what was your approach to it?
Nico Santos: Well, it was pretty hard. I’m a big fan of the genre, but I’ve never been to anything like this before, so I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I don’t think I was prepared to see how grand the scale it was, like the actual physical set was there.I was talking to Miriam and Chak. [Chukwudi Iwuji] This was a lot like doing a play because of the scale of the set and the grandeur of it all. On top of that, you know, the characters we play were originally very theatrical.
In my previous life, I worked as a dresser for a theater company, and I also worked as a dresser for a Shakespeare festival, so I really thought this. A great Shakespearean actor will perform.” I just watched. And it was so great that Chuck and Miriam played these characters, so many times I had to get out of that scene and be like, ‘You’re in a scene with them! bottom. You’re working now, be there, be there. ”
Miriam Scholl: Yes, really. I’m a big fan of the genre too, so it felt like a dream come true. It was like your inner child screaming the entire time you were on set when you suddenly became a normal human adult and could actually play in the sandbox. Believe it or not, there was that duality because you have to be professional. I don’t know if I actually achieved it. but I tried.
We were on the premiere carpet and it felt like the three of us were hugging each other. It’s pretty big, you know? Please enjoy it because the scale is large. ’ It seemed like a good memory to remember to enjoy. Because otherwise it doesn’t make sense.
That actually leads to another question I had since you two were talking about your experience with Chuk, right? His on-screen presence in this movie is so grand, so big, so advanced evolutionist. I love how he goes from being sober to just plain insane as the movie progresses. What was it like matching that energy in those scenes and using him to your advantage?
Scholl: It’s like playing tennis with someone who’s really good and you’re getting better at the game. I’m bad at tennis no matter what, no matter how good you are, I’m not going to get better. but, Is that how you feel about acting? It’s like giving permission to raise the stakes to the highest level, and that’s the most fun way. Everyone was very welcoming. Did you notice Nico?
Santos: Well, as Miriam said, I think James directing the character of Chuck made it kind of like a game of tennis. You were suddenly allowed to match this level, evil, and meanness of the world we live in. We really got the tip from Chuk. There was a scene where the three of us were walking and talking, and on that day, I thought, “I could feel his boiling anger emanating from him.” It’s the quiet rage that lives within High Evolution, and I loved the feeling I got from that scene, feeling, “Chuck might kill me when James yells cut…”. [Laughs]
Shawl: Maybe, maybe! it can happen. And after so many takes, I was like, ‘Did I walk 15 miles down this hallway? [Laughs] do you remember that I thought: “I’ve been working hard on my thighs. Today is leg day.”
Santos: Oh, that scene made me so nervous. I don’t know if you remember, but I was procrastinating and thinking, “I’m sorry, I swear to God, I’ve done that before.”
Scholl: No, but I think it went really well energetically. To tell the truth, this person is a capricious creator and destroyer.I mean, I think everyone has had a boss like that [laughs]. This is the worst boss ever. Same with the “Worst Boss Ever” T-shirt.
Santos: Advanced Evolution Wears Prada.
That’s the Disney+ show we need.
So, Miriam, I have a question for you. One of the most memorable scenes in the movie for me is when you and the others in the room finally pull their guns on the High Evolvers as they make more appearances. What was it like reading that part of the script when you were like, “Oh, we’re going to have a little rebellion?”
Shawl: Rebellion! I don’t know if you’re spoiling me.
Yes, spoilers are fine!
Shawl: And then I disappeared and was never heard from again. No, at that moment, are you kidding? It was great when I read that moment. I thought, “I’m going to take over the ship?” Oh my God, I’m going to take over the ship! with a space gun? It’s a scene I’ve played in every basement and backyard since I was six years old. you know what i mean? And I started doing it. So it was beautiful. I was so, so excited to be able to do that. And it doesn’t go according to her plan and is short-lived. It’s not the longest, but it’s still on the resume, but it’s not the longest captain she’s ever held.
That was also a big turning point. See, I could write a dissertation on all these movies. I over-intellectualize everything just because it’s fun, and I’m a sci-fi nerd, and that’s what we do. So I thought, this is exactly what the person who followed the leader over the worst cliffs and into the worst places was like, ‘Wait, where, why… what am I doing? It’s right before a moment like ‘. ? ’ And that moment of doubt. Because we have seen these leaders go nowhere without followers. So what makes a person or being subject to the worst of leaders? And what would it be like for them that moment when they realized, ‘Oh my God, I led myself off a cliff and I followed this person down a cliff’? So it was kind of fun to play in that moment where it kind of brakes. “No, it’s too late.”
Santos: At least the way I look at the chronicler Teal, I think it was like surviving at all costs to him. That’s why he continued to follow the highly evolved, follow his orders, and just be loyal to him. But then he will be the cause of our demise. I think it’s very ironic that we do.
Nico, I have one more question regarding Thiel. When he learns you can get him the files to save Rocket, you become Star-Lord’s obsessive. What was it like when you had to face Star-Lord and Groot?
Santos: It got really intense. That scene was also a very important shooting day. We shot the part with Chuck and Miriam, then the part with me and Chris Pratt and Groot, and then we had the security guards and all the other recorders, so it was a lot of fun. I felt like it was a really fun day on set because I got to see all that stuff like, “This is Marvel!” And stunts and explosions and he’ll have CGI too!” I was just like, ‘Bring it on’ because that day it felt like everything just happened. I literally feel like I’m living a dream right now filming this huge scene for Marvel. ’ It was a sort of out-of-body experience. I felt like I was just watching from above with the feeling of “I can’t believe it!”
Shawl: Oh, I see. As a fan, you’ll be like, “How the hell are you making this?” Oh how they do it! ”
Santos: That’s right! That’s exactly what it was.
Yes, we take it all in. That is wonderful. Last question. Would you like to work with James Gunn at DC Studios?
Shawl: Yes! A thousand times yes!
Santos: Of course! absolutely.
