Half-brothers Raymond Clawson and Bill Purcell first met in 1990. Ray has been an entrepreneur and businessman for many years. Bill was a musician, session player, arranger, composer, and professor at Belmont University in Nashville. Neither Bill nor Raymond had any idea that they had half-brothers twenty years apart. They began exploring the possibility of starting a music company together and in 1999 Netcom Music was born.
Their first project was ‘The Goodyears of Music’. This is a collection of lighthearted and wistful instrumental standards featuring Bill on piano, Craig Nelson on bass and Buddy Herman on drums.
Soon after, “Millennium” was recorded, which included a remake of Bill’s 1963 hit “Our Winter Love” and a beautiful original song for his daughter, “Laura’s Song.” They finished off the album with an instrumental original titled “A Time Remembered”.
Raymond and Bill took over Laura’s burgeoning jazz and swing standards project under Netcom with the release of It Had to Be Swing in 2000.
“Unkissed” was released soon after. The single “What Only Love Can Do” received wide publicity.
Bill and Laura recorded a Christmas album consisting of 15 holiday songs and two originals, the title tracks “That’s What Christmas Used to Be” and “Under the Mistletoe”. The title track continues to air every holiday season.
Netcom Music produced five albums in two years. “The Very Last Dancehall Left in LA” and “I Wanna Look Good For My Man” were recorded in his 2015. Bill wrote his seven-song arrangements, and Steve Mauldin, who handled the production, handled the rest.
In 2018, Bill’s wife Julie passed away from vascular dementia. It was his dream for her to honor her memory with an album. He wrote the music and lyrics to a haunting orchestral piece called “Lost in Time”. This final album began his production in August 2019, with Bill and Laura back in the studio, tracking his three songs in his room: “Sweet Dreams,” “Motherless Children,” and, of course, “Lilacs.” was recorded.
Bill started working on the deal in 2020, then Covid arrived and it all came to a halt. (original songs that weren’t recorded), ‘Faraway Places’ and ‘Every Love’.
Unfortunately, Bill passed away from Covid on September 3, 2020. Raymond and Laura decided to finish the album, and in January 2022 Music He went to Raw’s Oceanway Studios to finish it. They will be releasing four of his songs arranged by Bill and more by him, including “Tenderwish”, the final song Bill wrote and performed in the summer of 2020 as a gift to Raymond and his new wife Kay. recorded three songs.
