The trip, which also includes visits to Japan, South Korea and the UK, is billed as an international trade mission. This comes as the governor of Florida gears up for the start of the presidential election.
DeSantis will be overseas from April 24th to April 28th, starting in Japan and ending in the UK.
The visit comes amid escalating sectarian violence and tensions continue to mount over Netanihayu’s efforts to pass legislation that limits his country’s jurisdiction. Netanyahu, the country’s longest-serving prime minister, has suspended attempts to push for these changes after backlash from the public and members of his own administration. It said it has no plans to reopen, but that hasn’t stopped months of public protests in the country.
Prime Minister Netanyahu said on Sunday that he believed there was still broad support for judicial reform, but that there was disagreement about what it should look like.
“Well, I think there’s a broad consensus that we have to fix our justice system,” he said. “There is clearly a dramatic difference between views on how, to what extent, etc. But they cloud the fact that we are here celebrating a modern day miracle, the 75th anniversary of the founding of Israel. I don’t think it should.”
Attempts at judicial reform have been criticized by international leaders, including President Joe Biden. Mr Biden said earlier this month that he was “extremely concerned” about Israel’s democracy and wanted Netanyahu to “walk away” from plans to limit the independence and powers of the judiciary.Netanyahu on Sunday said he did not believe the judicial plan would interfere with relations with the US
“I cherish our alliance with the United States, and I cherish my more than 40-year friendship with President Biden,” he said. “I don’t think anything will be like that. But it’s an internal problem that we have to work out.”
Netanyahu was a close ally of former President Donald Trump when he was in office, during which Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and moved the US embassy there from Tel Aviv.
