The National Broadcasting Commission has fined Channels Television N5 million for breaking broadcasting laws with a show with Labor Party vice-presidential candidate Datty Baba Ahmed.
This is contained in a March 27 letter to the television station’s CEO.
The Nigerian News Agency obtained the letter exclusively in Abuja on Friday.
The letter, titled “Provocative Interview Broadcast, Sanctions”, was signed by the Commission’s Executive Director, Ballarabe Ilera.
“NBC monitored the broadcast of a live interview by Seun Okibaloye, the vice-presidential candidate politician for Labor vice-presidential candidate Dr. Datty Baba Ahmed, on Wednesday, March 22nd.
‗Dr Baba Ahmed said it was unconstitutional to take the oath of office of the president elected on May 29, 2023 because of electoral fraud.
He said the broadcast was volatile, could cause public confusion, and violated several sections of the Broadcast Code.
“Consequently, for the following violations, Channels Television shall hereby be sanctioned and pay a fine of N5,000,000 (5 million naira) only in the first instance,” he said.
He added that further violations by television stations would attract higher sanctions.
“We recommend that you pay within two weeks of the date you receive this letter or the penalties will be reduced,” said the NBC Executive Director.
