The heavily armed woman who shot dead three children and three teachers at a Nashville school on Monday appears to be a former student at a private Christian campus, police said.
“At some point, she was a student at that school,” Nashville Metropolitan Police Chief John Drake told reporters hours after the Covenant school shooting. No, but that’s what I’ve been told.”
The shooter was identified as Audrey Hale, 28, of Nashville, who identified herself as transgender, according to the chief.
On Monday afternoon, multiple phone numbers listed for Hale’s mother and brother went unanswered.
Police said Hale was armed with “two assault rifles and a handgun” when confronted by five officers. Two of them opened fire, killing her, police said.

A car near the shooting site helped police identify the shooter.
“There was a car nearby that gave us a clue as to who she was,” Drake said.
Investigators combed through Hale’s home, he said.
A police tactical unit is found using a grenade-like device to break into a house listed as Hale’s residence.
“This is a wonderful family, but a tragedy,” said a neighbor.
Investigators are also investigating how the shooter broke into the school. Campus doors are usually locked, officials said.
“At this point, we’re still investigating exactly how she got in,” Drake said.
The chief praised the officer for quickly dealing with the shooter.
