Mother Culture, the songwriting partnership of brothers Darcy and Spencer Ward, is an emerging Melbourne group mining the sounds of pop and rock, creating their own sonic landscape of lush melodies and indie tones.
The pair wrote and recorded a series of new songs in 2022, choosing six songs to make up their debut EP, Lust For Love, which was released last week.

Ahead of this weekend’s EP launch show (March 25th), Spencer spoke about EPs, their influence, and the future of mother culture.
For those unfamiliar with mother culture, what’s the elevator pitch for the band’s style, musical direction?
We lean towards guitar, keys, drums, bass and vocals. Usually in the vein of indie rock, we’re endlessly excited by the indescribable, intuitive sound.
It may be a feeling of grief, anxiety, or love, but as long as music evokes that strange feeling, we get into it. It sounds completely different, even though it’s there.
A story of the origins of the mother culture. how did it start?
Being brothers might mean it took a long time to create, but the project officially came together between us around the end of 2019, just in time for lockdown. It grew out of the remnants of Darcy’s old band. After it disbanded, he continued working on music. We liked the name, so we decided to stick with it before joining me.
The impact each member has on the collective…how does it all distill down to the core elements of the mother culture?
As siblings, we grew up immersed in the same soundscapes, so our influences are more or less detached from the same fabric.
With that said, we are now in our mid-twenties and have identified our own interests and idols. We always make the pedigree work, but given our pedigree, it’s almost shocking how different our ideas can be. increase. Our dad was a total Beetlehead and newer to them than anyone else, so naturally we grew to like them a lot.
Plus recent artists from Bowie and Crowded House, Phoebe Bridgers and Tame Impala. We do everything on the record together, so the core element consists of who came up with each piece.
As a young emerging band, the ‘Lust For Love’ EP is a complete, high-quality release that covers a variety of genres, including country, pop, and rock. Did you have a specific idea about the collection of songs you wanted to collect, or was it a more organic process when the EP was formed?
We tried discussing EP ideas and soundscapes, but none were specific enough to convey 20 minutes of music, so we started by recording some of our favorites we wrote. I was.
During the weeks I spent in the studio, lyrical themes began to take shape, so I turned to Skid to give the whole piece a looser concept. It’s all about love, the quest for it, and all the ups and downs that come with it.
Some songs such as “Dive” and “Fall On My Face” were written midway through the sessions. Sometimes I write something and feel it’s worth recording. In other words, the development of the EP was very organic, and the more we cut it, the more naturally it formed.
The EP’s six tracks all encompass different layers of love… Are you both romantics at heart?
We are definitely romantics. The song itself is therapeutic to write, and for some reason our age or something else that seems to run into these situation ships may be influencing the song.
Sometimes the words spill onto the page and are understandable by the end of the song, other times the intent of the lyrics is conveyed right from the start. Either method works as long as you get that funny feeling.
Is there a real girl with the Doja Cat tattoo that inspired the song?
Certainly there is. She even posed for the artwork for the cover of her single earlier this year! Darcy wrote the song a week or two after we broke up and it’s one of our favorites. It’s a love song like a swaying star that you wish you didn’t have to end when it ended.
The process of composition and music production that transforms an idea into a finished song. Do you implement similar templates every time, or do you need your own space to bring each song to life?
We usually write songs or flesh out ideas alone, and if we’re satisfied or lack something, we’ll let others know. Then do more workshops until it sounds like a hit.
Then, if you plan to play the song with your band, do a demo. In some cases, it may even be the final recording.
I don’t think many musicians use templates to write songs. Who says they can actually command their artistic qualities like an arm or a leg because they’re actually showing up here. only. When they show up, record it and call it yours.
Your ‘Lust For Love’ EP has just been released, are you preparing your next song as a songwriter?
We recorded a lot of songs for this EP, so there’s a pretty old catalog of recordings out there, and maybe the A/B sides will come into play in a few months.
The songs themselves are always written. We just set aside time to work in the studio with each other. Additionally, Mind His Map for the next EP is in the works and I’m very excited for it to progress. I don’t know if there will be all of them this year, but there will definitely be some singles out.
The band’s name has changed a bit. Is there a relevant backstory, or is it just a case of him throwing the two words together?
“Let’s use it because it’s cool” comes from the meaning of the word.
Here’s the Wiki definition: “Mother culture is a term that describes the cultures of early peoples that had a great influence on later cultures and peoples.” So I think we’ve established ourselves as a few trailblazers in an incredibly dense indie rock scene. stay tuned to see how it unfolds.
Who are the live bands you surround yourself with and what does each bring to your project?
I am lucky to have a band full of great mates: Oli Collins (drums), Rhys Fraser-White (guitar, vocals) and Louis Adderley (bass).
Being in a band means spending a lot of time together and going through a unique emotional rollercoaster several times a week. Also, they’re music freaks who certainly don’t hurt.
You have a show at the Evelyn Hotel this weekend, what are you planning for the performance / are there any special guests planned?
I am very excited about this. It’s our largest room and I want to blow the lid off. The Kettleheads, MOZË and Spencer O’Leary (a multi-talented graphic designer) thrived in Melbourne with his artist lineup.
We will be playing all songs from the EP and had some rehearsals this week to finalize the setlist. If it’s anything like our other shows, I recommend buying a ticket so you don’t miss it. It’s also our best friend’s birthday in the crowd, so maybe a cake candle.
Are you planning an interstate trip?
We’re planning to travel the East Coast for the tour of our next EP, but we don’t have any plans yet.
Football season is finally back (let’s go to the Swans!). How intense/passionate is Barracks as a team-coloured Melburnian?
