For two UNC Charlotte students, Maximilian Leonard and Garrett Sparrow, the release of their song “Real Bad” was another addition to their self-written discography and a step in the direction of the music industry. Making music was their pastime and something they chose instead of going out.
A third-year political science major, Leonard has lived in North Carolina most of his life after moving from Rochester, Michigan. When he’s not in the makeshift studio, he’s playing soccer and going to the gym.
Sparrow is a sophomore marketing major, born and raised in Durham, North Carolina. His musical journey began when he was seven years old. By the age of ten, he began songwriting.
“My main goal was to get hooked on what I wanted to do by the time I got to college,” Sparrow said.
Leonard said the two met on a bus for a band trip, and he was working on editing the video while Sparrow worked on the song.
Leonard and Sparrow have been making music together for three years, but they said it doesn’t feel like a job. I find it easy to bring out my creativity.
“Garrett invited me to write a song when we started hanging out,” Leonard said.
This hangout eventually led them to where they are today.
Before the release of their song, Sparrow said the writing process for “Real Bad” was “just messing around” with the two.
“We both take our inspiration from different places, but we use it in the same way,” Leonard said.
They explained that this inspiration ranged from Leonard’s grandfather’s favorite band, the Beach Boys, to artists such as Frank Ocean, Childish Gambino and Pharrell Williams.
Although they found “Real Bad” easier to make, they both described the most problematic aspects of making the song.
“I was just trying to record it without laughing. I had to raise my voice very high to do that,” Leonard said.
Over the summer they will be releasing a project called “Biking With Francis” with fellow artist Josh Warren.
