Tennis great Martina Navratilova says she is cancer-free, nearly four months after announcing she was diagnosed with throat cancer and breast cancer.
Navratilova, 66, who has won a total of 59 Grand Slam titles in singles and doubles, said in January that she had stage 1 cancer.
“As far as they know, I don’t have cancer,” Navratilova told Talk TV’s Piers Morgan in an interview excerpt to be published on Tuesday. , just a few weeks and more preventive than anything else.”
The cancer was discovered in November last year, Navratilova released a statement, her representative said on January 3.
At the time, the 18-time Grand Slam singles champion and member of the International Tennis Hall of Fame said her prognosis was good and she was due to begin treatment in January.
“This double blow is serious, but it is still fixable and we hope to have a positive outcome,” Navratilova said at the time. “It will stink for a while, but I will fight with all my might.”
Navratilova was diagnosed with breast cancer in situ in 2010 and underwent a lumpectomy.
This time, while attending the season-ending WTA Finals in Fort Worth, Texas, last November, she noticed enlarged lymph nodes in her neck, and a biopsy showed early throat cancer. An unrelated breast cancer was discovered while Navratilova underwent a throat examination, she said.
