Margo Silker keeps an eye out for easier ground on ‘Lowland Trail’, first song from new album Valley of Joy of the Heart.The sequel to Cilker’s acclaimed 2021 album Pohorilthe new project will be released on September 15th.
“Lowland Trail” is breezy with acoustic strums and reverb-laden electric guitars, seeming to hold on to hope in the face of adversity. “There are miles ahead and miles behind/Looking for the low road,” sings Silker, acknowledging that there will always be difficulties ahead. “There are hills you can climb in your own good time.”
Valley of Joy of the Heart comes from the nickname of California’s Santa Clara Valley, where Silker grew up. These days, it’s more of a technology hub than an agricultural hub. The 11-track project was produced by Selah Cahoon and features musicians who have played with the Decemberists, Band of Horses and Beirut, as well as a cover of Ben Walden’s ‘Steelhead Trout’. As the title suggests, the album frequently addresses family and connection with nature.
“I wrote these songs surrounded by the rugged landscape of the Northwest, but I leaned towards where I was born,” Silker said in the release. “I felt disconnected from my family and the valley that supported them. I spent hours thinking about my sense of belonging. After I stopped, I ruminated on where I had gotten to.”
Silker, who has played shows at American Aquarium and Drive-By Truckers, will begin a headlining solo tour this fall. Dates begin October 5 in Missoula, Montana, and tickets for all performances go on sale May 19.
