According to TSN Hockey Insider Pierre Leblanc, Mark Berjevin and Peter Chiarelli were among the candidates interviewed in the first wave of interviews for the Pittsburgh Penguins’ search for a new general manager.
LeBlanc said the Penguins hoped to interview 10 to 12 candidates in the first interview.
The 57-year-old Montreal native was named general manager of the Canadiens in 2012, a position he held until his dismissal in late November 2021. In his nearly ten years in Montreal, Birjevin made one appearance in the Stanley Cup final, which he lost. He moved to the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2021 and won three division titles in a total of six playoff appearances.
Burjevin currently serves as a senior advisor to the general manager of the Los Angeles Kings.
Chiarelli, 58, from Nepean, Ontario, was the general manager of the Boston Bruins from 2006-2015 before joining the Edmonton Oilers from 2015-2019. Chiarelli had a lot of success in Boston, winning the Stanley Cup in 2011. He made seven playoff appearances in 2014 and won the Presidents Trophy.
Edmonton has had a rather difficult time for Chiarelli, making just one playoff appearance in four seasons.
Chiarelli is currently the vice president of hockey operations for the St. Louis Blues.
LeBlanc added that Carolina Hurricanes assistant general manager Eric Tarski and Buffalo Sabers associate general manager Jason Karmanos also interviewed with the Penguins.
Pittsburgh fired general manager Ron Hextall and hockey business unit president Brian Burke last month and is looking for new bosses.
The Penguins finished the 2022-23 season with a 40-31-11 record, missing the playoffs for the first time since 2006.
