What is your earliest memory?
My newborn sister, Bridget, came home from the hospital and was walking down the street in her mother’s arms. She remembers looking through the frosted glass of the front door and she saw a white oval strand of red hair hovering towards me.
who is your hero?
As a child I admired Tove Jansson and still do. A photo of her swimming in the Finnish archipelago hangs on my study door. This is an example of how she lives her life as an artist with her talent and good taste. As a child, I was always intrigued as to why her book biography, published in the 1970s, stated that she lived “alone” on the island. Of course, she was not alone. She lived with her partner Tuulikki her Pietilä.
What was the last book that changed your mind?
body keeps score By Bessel van der Cork. This is an interesting explanation of how our bones and muscles absorb experience.
What time and place would you like to live other than where you live?
Anywhere, Anywhere, at once.
Which politician do you admire?
Aneurin Bevan had integrity and compassion that are often lacking in many politicians today. Darnella Frazier received a special Pulitzer Prize for her amazing bravery in filming the murder of George Floyd.

What TV show can’t you live without?
I rarely watch TV. There are too many other things to do.
Who will paint your portrait?
I’m terribly restless, so I don’t think I’d be a good sitter. But I would like to meet Artemisia Gentileschi or Agnolo Bronzino, so if I can chat with them, I might be able to keep my nerves at bay.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
“An apology always soothes a problem.” It’s a good credo, but not enough people practice it.
What is bothering you now?
The battery in my four-year-old iPhone is weak. It lasts about an hour, and I can’t leave the house without my charging lead and power bank load buzzing. I could always go buy a new phone, but that feels like succumbing to the built-in obsolescence of things.
What is the one thing that makes your life better?
If my beloved very old cat refrains from peeing on the bedroom rug. Please, Moses, use the litter box provided.
When were you most happy?
When I am with my 3 children, they are all healthy.
What kind of job would you have chosen in a different life?
If I wasn’t a writer, I would probably be pretty frustrated and frustrated.
Are we all doomed?
Well, we will all die, but we must consider that fact with optimism, not fatalism.
