German magazine Die Aktuelle this month published fake statements about Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher recovering from a brain injury.
The editor who claimed to have conducted an exclusive interview with the affected Formula 1 icon Michael Schumacher has been fired.
German magazine Die Aktuelle sparked outrage after publishing an article containing false quotes of Schumacher. The seven-time world champion has not given an interview since suffering a severe brain injury in a skiing accident in December 2013.
Fake estimates were generated using artificial intelligence (AI). Schumacher’s family is trying to keep the retired driver’s medical condition a secret and are planning to file a lawsuit against Die Aktuelle. The magazine’s publisher apologized to Schumacher’s family and readers, calling the article “tasteless and misleading.”
Die Aktuelle caused controversy when it published a picture of a smiling Schumacher on the cover of the magazine’s April 15th edition. That image bears a headline claiming it had the “first interview” with the driver’s legend since his injury.
Yet another cover tagline claims the article “seems to sound real” and alludes to the use of AI. Unsigned, this article looks like a genuine interview until the anonymous author confirms that the quotes were generated using his AI.
The article claims that Schumacher “can stand alone and even take a few slow steps.” Also, the injured star’s family all claim they are “very saddened” about his accident.

The story angered thousands of F1 fans and Schumacher’s family. Her Funke Magazines, publisher of Die Akutelle, responded by firing her editor-in-chief, Anne Hoffmann.
“This tasteless and misleading article should never have been published,” said Bianca Pohlman, managing director of Funk Magazines. It never lives up to the standards of journalism you would expect from a good publisher.”
Schumacher is one of F1’s greatest drivers after winning the world title in 1994, 1995, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004. He retired in his 2012 year after suffering a skiing accident. He returned to his home in September 2014 to continue his recovery.
