Luke Morley stood at the center of the British rockers Thunder Since 1989, he has worked as a guitarist, chief songwriter and producer. He was the linchpin to the success of their 14 albums and played a key role in building these rock heroes’ loyal fan bases and maintaining their enduring popularity. Thanks to that, Thunder has enjoyed his seven UK Top 10 albums and his 18 Top 40 singles: an impressive metric, but many know Luke Morley, Or more than you’d expect and there’s his new solo album. ‘song fartROM T.“Blue Room” As he confidently steps onto the rock-coloured Americana stage, other facets of his talent come to the fore.
The new album is the culmination of Luke Morley’s multifaceted talents as a songwriter, singer, musician and producer. Not only is he a renowned guitarist, left-handed, but he’s also a multi-instrumentalist, playing every instrument on the album, bardrums (Dave McCluskey takes on those duties). It also features Luke Morley’s strong yet nuanced rock vocals, singing lead on every track.
Luke has previously released solo material such as 2001’s El Gringo Retro (produced for EMI Japan and independently released in the UK). Andy Tyror (Duran Duran) — friend and colleague of Luke’s days in the late rock supergroup Power plant.
Additionally, in the last five years Thunder have released no less than three UK Top 5 albums. Even lockdown didn’t stop the band. Because during the pandemic, despite all the restrictions, we were able to release All The Right Noises (2021) and his 20-song double album Dopamine (2022). Dopamine ranked in the top five and Thunder embarked on his tour of the UK Arena, culminating in a stormy show at his Arena Wembley.
But the COVID years have forced Luke Morley and Thunder to pause and work differently under lockdowns, gigs, venues and other restrictions. Morley, who works from his home, used his time admirably for his own records.
“It was like between Thunder albums.” says Morley. “And I thought, ‘I have other ideas, let’s do some tweaking.'” It wasn’t purposeful, but it was a little encouragement from people around me. A close friend and wife said to me, “This is really good, there’s an album out there.” I thought it would be okay and decided to make an album. That’s really how it happened. “
There were a lot of great songs that Luke felt didn’t deserve to be sung by Thunder frontman Danny Bowes. Instead, they bolstered what already felt like the backbone of Solo his project.
“I’ve been lucky enough to work with some great singers. Danny (Bowes, of Thunder) Clearly,” Reflecting Luke, “After that, my ‘in-between’ project, The Union: Peter Shoulder, had a beautiful voice. I worked with Power Station and Robert Palmer on and off for a few years, but I also liked singers like Lou Reed, Bob Dylan and Tom Petty. Having an incredible set of pipes makes it easier not to think about what you’re doing. The less gifted among us have to think a lot about how we interpret the lyrics.
“Songs from The Blue Room” builds on a solid foundation of sophisticated lyrics and haunting melodies Morley learned long ago.
In the words of journalist Paul Sexton, “Luke took a temporary detour from his role as Thunder’s chief songwriter and lead guitarist to make a record under his own name that many wanted. Self-produced, Songs from The Blue Room’ is a revelation beautifully packed with sticky melodies, great guitar textures, surprising twists and turns, and a charismatic lead vocal. It may be the most amazing Americana album of the year.”
