Eddie Van Halen is featured in one of the most introspective moments in Tape 4 of the daylong interview in 1980. A particularly heartwarming section delves into his love and appreciation for his parents and brother Alex, and reminisces about his life in Holland and California before forming Van Halen. He delves into the inner workings of Van Halen his band, life on tour, and vents his frustration with the pressure of having to come up with all of Van Halen’s music. As Eddie puts it, “I’m the spark plug for the engine. No one but me.”
There are a lot of technical details that are intriguing for a listening guitarist. For example, Eddie explains the tricks of keeping his Strat in tune, details how he built his first guitar, rocks a Floyd Rose rocking his tremolo and various wireless pros and cons of his system.
