Jerusalem (CNN) Dozens of rockets were fired from Lebanon into Israel on Thursday, according to the Israeli military.
It was the largest attack since the war between the two countries in 2006, killing about 1,200 Lebanese and 165 Israelis.
Israel closed its northern airspace after the barrage. No fatalities were reported as of Thursday afternoon, and it is not yet known which group in Lebanon launched the rocket.
A video posted on social media showed a rocket passing through the skies of northern Israel, emitting the sound of an explosion in the distance.
The Lebanese military told CNN it had no information to release yet. Lebanese militant group Hezbollah told CNN it would not comment at this time. The incident occurred a day after Palestinian armed group Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh arrived in Beirut for talks with Hezbollah officials.
The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said it was “continuously receiving updates on the security situation and will be conducting an assessment with the heads of the security services.” Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant was briefed on “the recent security situation on Israel’s northern border,” the defense ministry said.
Tensions have soared in the region after Israeli police stormed Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque on two separate occasions on Wednesday as Palestinian worshipers prayed during the holy month of Ramadan.
Footage inside the mosque shows Israeli officers beating people with batons and rifle butts, arresting hundreds of Palestinians. Israeli police said “hundreds of mobs” entered the mosque after attempting to barricade it inside.
The incident was widely condemned by the Arab and Islamic worlds and prompted retaliatory rocket launches from Gaza into Israel.
There have been several small-scale rocket attacks from Lebanon in recent years, sparking retaliatory attacks from Israel. of Israeli soldiers and one Spanish peacekeeper killed. A Palestinian faction in Lebanon was believed to be behind these rocket attacks.
The 2006 conflict was the largest flare-up between Lebanon and Israel since 1982. About 1,200 Lebanese and her 165 Israelis died in exchanges of fire involving Israeli air raids and naval and air blockades across the country. Hezbollah has repeatedly fired rockets reaching deep into Israeli territory during the conflict. =
