Salt Lake City (ABC4) — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has released a response to a May 14 “60 Minutes” report in which a whistleblower accused the church of mismanagement of funds.
David Nielsen, a former employee of the church’s investment firm Ensign Peak Advisors, has alleged misappropriation of billions of dollars in tithes. He claimed the amount was $100 billion.
The church did not immediately respond to 60 Minutes’ report, but issued the following statement this afternoon:
The Church believes it is financially responsible by carefully ensuring that sufficient resources are available to fulfill its divinely appointed responsibilities. Members of the Church who support the work of salvation through living the gospel of Jesus Christ, caring for those in need, embracing the gospel for all, and uniting families forever, we believe in the power of Jesus Christ. Keep moving forward according to the gospel. make this world a better place.
It’s a shame that 60 Minutes tried to enhance an article based on unsubstantiated allegations by former officials who have differing views on how the Church should manage its resources.

Interviewer Sharyn Alfonsi puts the endowment at $150 billion, but Bishop W. Christopher Waddell said he could neither confirm nor deny that estimate.
Nielsen said many of Ensign Peak’s employees believed the funds were set aside for the Second Coming. Waddell said the money was not for the Second Coming, but for the continued operation of the church into the future.
