Kathryn Hahn We are making good progress. Maybe it’s an exaggeration. Maybe not. But given her impressive career so far (“Transparent” “Captain Fantastic” “Private Life”) It’s probably not that big of a surprise either. The Chicago native is currently filming her Emmy-nominated spinoff “Wonder Vision” long-awaited “Agatha: Order of Chaos” It was an integral part of one of Netflix’s biggest movies of the last year. ‘Glass Onion: A Knives Out’ by Rian Johnson mysterious. This week she returns with an already famous performance on the Hulu exclusive series “Small beautiful things” unexpected adaptation of Sheryl StrayedIt’s a bestseller in more than worthy of your attention.

The sequel to Strayed, which follows her hugely successful literary debut. “wild,” “Tiny Beautiful Things” is a collection of essays compiled from her anonymous online advice column, “Dear Sugar,” before her novel became a hit.show runner Liz Tiger (“Small fires everywhere”) and her writing staff adapted it into a story centered around Claire (Hahn), a woman in her late 40s who is struggling with a rocky marriage and who knows what she has to offer. A teenage daughter who doesn’t want a relationship and works in a living facility. She is miles away from her original profession, her writing. When a friend of hers suggested she take over his online advice column, her creative powers began to seep in, and her memories of her youth (Sarah Pidgeon) and her difficult relationship with her mother (Merritt Weber), rising to the surface.
What makes ‘Tiny Beautiful’ different from other limited series in this ‘genre’ is how the filmmakers integrated both Hahn’s and Pigeon’s versions of the character into the same contemporary scene as the story unfolds. This was just one of his topics we discussed on Hahn’s day off from “Agatha” late last month. Oh, don’t worry, she will chime in on that too.

Playlist: The most obvious question is how the project came to be. What made you say yes?
pilot. A beautiful character at its core. Age doesn’t mean women can’t find their own voice and purpose, it’s the idea that they’re always evolving. I loved how painfully funny it was, and then I read this source material and it got me even more excited. I love it.
So I haven’t read the book.
surely.
But from what I have read It doesn’t seem like this book has the same story as this project. Am I wrong on that point?
No, you are absolutely right. Books are completely different. “Tiny Beautiful Things” is a compilation of her column of advice Cheryl wrote anonymously under her Dear Sugar name for her literary website The Rumpus. And she didn’t come out as Cheryl Strayed as she wrote it “wild” It was a big success. But the reason it got so many people on their nerves and was successful anonymously was because it wasn’t advice, the responses were so honest and empathetic. It was a more circular conversation with painfully honest questions. And her answers were extremely honest, drawn from her own experience and life. You have to read, it’s Gregory.
Please advise and read. i’m a bad reader I read almost nothing.
Gregory, you can pick it up and read one letter and reply. It takes 10 minutes.Please.
I do it! So read the pilot, read the book. Will Liz and I get a synopsis of Claire’s arc on the phone? Did we need to know that before we fully committed?
I wasn’t sure where the story was going. I read the pilot, but didn’t read the next few episodes until just before the contract was completed. was And it was largely based on intuition and Liz’s writing in the pilot and her subsequent meeting with Cheryl. It was real excitement.
So for those who were Cheryl fans, should this be considered more of an exploration of Cheryl’s life than the content of the book?
Cheryl’s life was already so beautifully portrayed, unearthed, and beautifully decked out on celluloid in the incredible starring “Wild.” Reese Witherspoon and again Laura Dern as her mother. So it was very important to Cheryl that this wasn’t just another version of her life. But I’m not playing a fictional version of Sheryl Strayed. With this Claire Pearce I’m playing, Sarah Pidgeon You’re playing as a younger version of Claire.
She said, “I’ve never done this before. I’m so excited to be there.” I was. She was so excited to be there, but people were so excited that she added a few things, but like, “This has to be my life again.” It never happened. It was already happening in “Wild”.
Were you pleasantly surprised when you finally filmed it or read the entire eight episodes without giving us a major spoiler?
scene with family. Quintin Playawho plays my husband, and Tanjen Crawford who plays my daughter. We didn’t have a lot of time to build our chemistry, but it worked out naturally. When chemistry happens that way, such things are just a joy. Naturally, it was a real gift and a real joy.Our chemistry was great. And every time we played together as individuals or as a family, it was great.
As the show progresses, there are more and more scenes where both your version and the younger version of Claire played by Sarah are in the same space and having the same dialogue.
yes.
And this is not a 1000% breakthrough device and has been done before in various iterations.
yes.
But it’s been a long time since I’ve had such an impact. And could you briefly describe how you all worked in the process? were clearly distinguished?
It was a very interesting, complicated and difficult process to be honest, because there were some very emotional scenes and we had to be at a pretty high level. And the shit we were exploring was pretty deep. It was probably later in the season and Sarah and I hadn’t spent that much time together. Come to think of it, the younger version of Claire doesn’t know the older version of Claire. She had never met him before. you know what i mean? In fact she didn’t know who I was. She doesn’t know who she will become. She doesn’t know who this person is. And my younger version of memory is hazy and through a particular lens.
So what we did was shoot my version first and then she shot her version after I got home so we had to feel like we were doing some deed. Gone and we could have our own space.. you know what I mean? I could have my own space, so I left so Sarah could have hers. And it was kind of a beautiful handover. It was important that Sarah had her own space and I had my own, so I didn’t have to swap her line by line.
Because most viewers think, “Oh, obviously they worked together or she was watching you on set, because it flows so well.” Were you surprised how it turned out?
It flows so easily, I know. Well, in the first or he two episodes, young Claire didn’t make much of an appearance.
right.
Sarah was watching me behind the monitor. And she was able to absorb a lot of me there. And she was able to filter through the rest of the series. And that’s important to me too. It doesn’t have to be an imitation, she doesn’t have to imitate. . And I’m not tall by any means. Memories are memories.
yes.
it is what it is. So I wanted to make sure she wasn’t under any pressure to imitate anything. I have dyed my hair thousands of times. Everything is different. So I hope people’s sense of humor will change. 20 years feels like a long time. And especially since she had just lost her mother.
right.
Her pain is raw on the surface. I’ve been able to cover it for years with defense and comedy and defense and all armor. She’s raw nerve. And after a little rehearsal period, it seemed like the less time we spent together, the better.
absolutely.
So it worked. And if we were in the same space going through those final scenes together, like Swapout, there would have been more imitations. it was done. Desiree Akavan With who directed that finale, and Liz Tigler. I think that’s why it worked seamlessly because there was really no need to imitate it. Her girlfriend had her own space and she seemed to be completely within herself. She was a fresh sadness in the world she was in. And I was in the world I was in. It’s armed, hardened, old, at stake 20 years later, my marriage fell apart. Who am I?
I have time for one last question. I know you were in Atlanta filming Agatha: Order of Chaos. You probably have an NDA with the mandate “Don’t say a word, don’t say anything”.
Gregory, I will tell you everything.
I think it’s my question, but I feel like a lot of fans are guessing what they think of the series It will be.
of course.
And I guess my question is: Should they consider it? Or could it be going in a different direction than expected?
I think all bets are off. I think all bets are off and all bets are on the table. what about the answer?
that’s a good answer.
OK.
I think that makes everyone at Marvel very happy.
I hope it makes you happy too.
The entire “Tiny Beautiful Things” season ends on Friday, April 7th.
