Constantin Rega: After his debut, bearskinWhere did you want to go together? panther gap?
James A. McLaughlin: This book has been published by several different sources. These, at least for me, have evolved over time. And the first thing that mattered was a dream I had long ago.
There was a boy who got lost in the desert and found a door leading to a cliff. Then a girl came out and they went to her house. They meet a terrible father, a strange brother, and a bitter uncle.and that’s basically the cast panther gap.
So at the time, I just wrote a short story. And it sat there for years. Years later, I read a book by nature writer Barry Lopez.I love all his books, but this one wolf and human. There are several paragraphs in there about this man, Friedrich Ramblers. Kind of like a 19th-century stereotypical German outdoor adventurer. And he traveled to Mongolia and was fascinated by eagle falconry. Back in his hometown in Canada, he came up with the idea of training an eagle to hunt wolves by flying them at the children of his servants. He made them wear leather armor with rawhide strapped to their backs. Then Barry Lopez kind of dropped the topic.
But I thought, ‘What’s going to happen to those kids?and when preparing for publication bearskin, the publisher was talking about the next project. So I thought the best way to write a book quickly would be to put all the ideas I’ve been working on into a book.
It still took me 4-5 years to put this book together in a publishable form. These are his two main thrusts, and once you’re in, you’ll have your own character, mature enough in your mind, to take off little by little. It’s this strange phenomenon that they start doing something themselves and surprise you, after that it’s just a normal writing process.
I always find it interesting when writers say their characters are alive and do things unintentionally. Why do you think it’s for you?
Yes, it’s interesting. If you live long enough with these characters, they will develop in your subconscious and seem to do things for themselves. It’s not really a supernatural muse perched on your shoulder and talking to you. It’s as if their avatar lives in your subconscious.
What themes did you write about? bearskin versus panther gap?
panther gap With a larger canvas and more characters, the work delved deeper into the childhood development of the two main characters. And so the theme expanded.
What does it mean to have a legacy imposed on you by your family? How will different people react to it? It is also how it is dismantled and dissected by people who have traditionally grown skeptical about what it means and works.
I read a lot of the author Paul Shepard. And he has a very interesting idea of how humans have evolved over millions of years through a very specific maturation process, that there was a “good way” to grow. increase. And in Shepard’s view, that’s how hunter-gatherer cultures raised people for thousands of years, before agriculture and civilization emerged. And he thinks the maturation process is messed up these days. And that’s one of the reasons why humanity seems completely insane about destroying the world we live in.
So I had some pretty extreme and interesting ideas already in my dad, Leo’s head, and got him to really get down to business and do the best I could on this secluded ranch to raise my kids that way. I wanted him to try. And let’s see what happened to children with different personalities.
In my previous book, I originally explored those ideas as well. However, in the revision process most of them were deleted and only implied.that is more clear panther gap, because there are characters who are discussing and arguing about it. Talking about them individually, they sound pretty crazy and not what you want to read in an entertainment novel. But they support the work.
Going back a bit, what inspired you to write in the first place?
As a child, I spent all my time either reading or playing in the outside world, playing in streams or running in the woods. I had the great fortune of spending my childhood on a farm. Not real farmers, but my parents started summer camp in his 50’s.
I am there now My wife and I live on a farm in Rockland County. It’s like my heart’s home here. A place that has been imprinted on me since I was a baby, when I was a toddler, and even when I was a small child. When I read it, I get so excited that I start acting out what’s there.When I was very young, my brother gave me tarzan the monkey, just looking at what. So I immediately take off my shirt, wear a headband, and run around with a knife. And the whole idea is that both are fascinated by fiction and then vent into the world of nature.
I think these two things were forced on me from an early age. When I was in high school, I read a book by Ernest Hemingway. green hills of africa. And I think, “This guy gets paid to go on safari and write about it.” That’s life for me, I thought. You know, that was my idea of what it means to be a writer. Since then it has changed quite drastically.
After that, I majored in English at university and majored in writing. And she went to law school because she was told she had to be able to earn a living before she could become a writer. After wearing a suit for a year and a half and working in a large office tower in downtown Richmond, I retired and pursued an MFA in Creative Writing at UVA.
Now, what do you want the viewers to feel from this work?
First and foremost, I want you to have fun and be engrossed in reading. And they find it a challenging, stimulating, and emotionally charged experience.and bearskin, After reading, many people told me that they also want to take care of the outdoors outside. You know, they were interested in observing the whole creatures that exist in the ecosystem, not just the animals that can be shot or caught.
I love how people take the conflicting opinions and worldviews of movies seriously. panther gapthey ponder how Leo is trying to relate to the world and raise his children, and how his daughter, Summer, is loyal to the land. And his son Bowman has a deep spiritual and mystical connection with so-called nature. And I don’t think the reader will think ‘I would too’. But take it seriously and consider those perspectives and see if there is potential for expanding your awareness there.
Can you tell us something about your next project?
Yes, we are doing well. slowly. Probably about a fifth of the way through.will be a more direct sequel bearskin.Everything takes place in the mountains of Virginia bearskin was. But I’ve been thinking about the idea of them going to the Southwest for spells. Maybe not.
In my book, it’s very interesting to know what different people value and what they don’t. And some of it amazes me. I’m curious what happens with that.
