I told him that this was one of those Disney movies that seemed to be made for everyone and that I didn’t want to label it as a “preteen” or children’s movie. It’s for the dreamers of all of us, and having grown up on Disney, it really boosts what audiences think of the film. It was about his own journey as a director and writer.
“In writing this film, I drew a lot from my journey of making films,” he said. “My version of this is Jin Can Direct. And movies are made up and they can make things happen. Looking back on my life after it’s over, it’s hard to pull what I’ve seen in the movies into real life. You feel great and love this character, but you also go through some things you have to face every day, like self-doubt, invisible, invisible problems, ideals with your parents. It’s about working through the struggles in relationships that aren’t meaningful.”
He went on to talk about how the movie really tackles all of this. “And just really addressing these issues in practice. And I think when you’re looking at it, you’re like, ‘Wow, this is real.’ That’s what I’m trying to do with this, not just an entertainment experience, as great movies are. ”
