Indiana Musician Influenced by St. John’s Upbringing
Released at 10:17 am on Saturday, April 15, 2023
- Musician Troy Henry’s musical knowledge came from the 1980s River Parish band.
LAPLACE — Troy Henry has spent the past 20 years working behind the scenes in the music business, helping others write songs and acting as a mentor to emerging musicians. Now, he’s stepping into the limelight with the release of his latest single, “Treat Her Like a Queen.”
“It’s finally time to do something for yourself,” Henry said. “I’m old and have a lot of experience. I have a lot to write about.”
Henry currently lives in Indiana, but his journey as a singer and songwriter began in the 1970s and 80s, growing up in the Parish of John the Baptist.
Henry looked up to musicians like Cardell and Larry Joseph of the Reserve-based band Triad. He had the chance to perform with his brothers when he was 13 and will never forget them commenting on how powerful his vocals were at such a young age. Triad also introduced Henry to the idea of combining instruments with his vocals. It is thanks to those influences that he plays keyboards today.
Southern music teacher Clarence Clayton was another inspiration, along with St. James Parish’s popular band Sweet Wine.
“When I was a student, I had a chance to check out Sweet Wine. I got a lot of experience from opening up to major artists,” Henry said.
Henry’s music conveys the soothing beats of old school R&B and a message that he hopes the world will resonate with.
“I wrote ‘Treat Her Like a Queen’ because a lot of values have changed and we don’t see many men who truly worship women. I feel like I’m demeaning women with the music that’s out there when it should be treated as such,” Henry said.
Henry considers himself lucky to have found a woman who has stood by him as he pursues his dreams.
According to Henry, “Treat Her Like a Queen” is also dedicated to Breonna Taylor and Sandra Bland, two young women who died at the hands of law enforcement and never received justice.
Since the single’s popularity, Henry plans to release a remix this summer featuring hip-hop legends Derek Robertson and Precise.
“We want to release it when everyone’s having a barbecue outside,” Henry said. “It’s been a long time coming, but people can definitely expect more music to come out of me. I’m in to win.”
Henry teased that his next single will extend the message of “Treat Her Like a Queen” by reminding women that “it doesn’t have to be a side piece.”
Henry’s music is available on all major streaming platforms.
