Grammy-winning singer India Arie has put her songs back on Spotify. Last year, the “Video” singer removed all music from the popular platform after issues with podcaster Joe Rogan and Spotify itself.
Rogan hosts his own podcast. Joe Rogan Experience, on Spotify. As with any podcast, the host always speaks his mind. Rogan is no exception. Allie says she has a problem with Logan because she keeps using negative words all the time when discussing blacks and browns. Also, she didn’t like how Spotify treated black artists.
in an interview with billboardthe 47-year-old artist explains why he protested against Spotify.
“I did it in the name of my dignity. It has deeply affected the ability of people….they are giving this man 200 million dollars for using racist language – for me my dignity couldn’t stand it.
India goes on to explain that streaming platforms like Spotify make life difficult for songwriters and artists. Record labels partnered with streaming services to determine who received what. This leaves artists and songwriters with little to do. First, the label is paid. Then Spotify takes the percentage. Finally, artists are paid, then songwriters.
She protested for a year, but the “Brown Skin” singer’s catalog, with over a million monthly listeners, is back on Spotify. There were two key factors for her to do so. It’s a royalty payment and an increase in royalty her rate. Recently, the songwriter’s royalty rate jumped from her 10.5% to her 15.1%, dating back to 2018, so she’ll receive an updated rate for all songs written after her 2018.
Clearly India wants these checks!
“So when those two things changed, I put my music back on because I want the check. Not only do I want the check, I deserve the check.”
