Jessica Williams Long before the penultimate episode of the Apple TV+ comedy, we stepped into “Shrinking.” But there’s a moment of sheer joy and improvisation in episode 9’s “Moving Forward,” which Williams says is his favorite of the entire first season. Paul (Harrison Ford) is the attending physician Julie (Wendy Malick), Gabby’s reaction is one of shock, admiration, and childlike amazement.
“It’s one of the things I’m most proud of this season,” Williams said in an exclusive video interview for the Gold Derby. “I like the way they edited and directed it. They captured a lot of good moments. And I also like how Gabby leaves and Harrison looks at me. I really love it there.” So many things.I’m really happy to be working with Harrison Ford.I was really happy with Gabby at that point. It was so fun and playful and I’m so proud of the work.”
co-creation Bill Lawrence, Brett Goldstein and Jason Segel, “Shrinking” is a comedy about a therapist named Jimmy (played by Siegel) who tries to piece his life together a year after his wife’s death. But despite its heavy premise, the show is entertaining. It’s about grief and therapy, but it also finds an unexpected relationship with family. centered and eventually finds herself romantically involved with Jimmy.
“When I first signed on, they didn’t know much about Gabby. There were just a few things that they wanted her to happen,” Williams said of getting the role. , was written as a balance between a grieving Jimmy and Paul, a rogue with his own trauma, including a Parkinson’s diagnosis and a somewhat estranged daughter. , was encouraged to improvise as much as possible to flesh out the character.
“A lot of the time what they did was what we shot, and the writers looked at what we shot and reacted to what I improvised and what worked for my character. “So by the time we get into the second half of the season, I think Gabby is very developed. There was a lot to improvise and come up with.”
At just 33, Williams already has an impressive comedy background. This skill came in handy in “shrinking”, which is all about character relationships, such as between Gabby and Jimmy, Gabby and Paul.Or played by Liz, Gabby and Jimmy’s nosy neighbor Christa Miller.
“Most importantly, try to understand the relationship with each person, whether Liz is very specific or Jason is very specific or Harrison is very specific. And I think if you attack those scenes as specifically as possible, Gabby will fit in the spot,” Williams says. “With Harrison, for example, it’s really fun to haunt him. I was like, “What can I give him to make him more irritable and more cheerful?” So I just played with it a bit. Then it helped me see what Gabby would be like in those scenes. It’s cool to see how it turned out.
