Hundreds, including a large contingent of law enforcement officers, showed up on Friday to pay their final respects to St. Croix County Deputy Katie Leising, who was killed in action.
A public visit to Hudson High School lasted from 9:00 a.m. to noon, followed immediately by a funeral and procession. As previously reported, state flags were ordered to fly at half-staff on Friday in honor of Rising.
About 1,500 police officers are expected to attend Friday’s event, many of whom were at the high school early Friday morning when the hearse arrived and helped put the coffin in the coffin.
Law enforcement officers and local residents will be invited to attend a vigil hosted by a former police chaplain on the steps of the Minnesota State Capitol Friday night at 6 p.m.
Rising’s death is the third time in the past month that a law enforcement officer has died in the line of duty in Minnesota or Wisconsin.
Barron County Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald spoke Friday to show support for the community following the deaths of two police officers in the county last month.
“It makes you emotional, and you try not to be a leader, and you don’t want to be weak, but weakness is fine. It’s going to be a really emotional afternoon, but we do it for Katy and her family and our brothers and sisters at the St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department,” Fitzgerald said.
Rising, 29, responded to a call about a driver in a ditch near Glenwood City, Wisconsin, on Saturday night.
Around 6:15 p.m., Rising arrived at the scene near the intersection of Highway 128 and Prefectural Road G. There he encountered a car stuck in a ditch and another car carrying people who had come to help.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice said in a news release that Rising asked Jeremiah Johnson, 34, the driver of the car that had fallen into the ditch, to undergo an on-site sobriety test, which he “evaded.” bottom.
Investigators then claimed he shot Mr. Rising, who fired three shots at him, all of which missed.

Good Samaritans pulled over and tried to save Rising’s life, but she was pronounced dead at a local hospital, the Wisconsin Department of Justice said.
Johnson was later found dead next to a gun after fleeing into nearby woods.
