Since they were no longer able to tour, many bands took the “work from home” route, doing livestreams, patreons, etc. to keep themselves busy and trying to recoup some of the money they didn’t get from touring. were initially unconvinced by the idea.
“We all felt very awkward,” says Attonito. “A playthrough video? This is something that obviously no one is really familiar with.”
The idea of a podcast where they invite their musician friends didn’t seem like the most outrageous option. is ready. It could be about what they wanted. Finally, the band turned dialogue into a song and got a digital copy and a special his one-off 7-inch record. That was it. There were no plans to make a record. But now we’re in the future, and the song and story have been refined and perfected with the help of punk whisperer Will Yip.

The Bouncing Souls members may have complained at first, but after decades of working together, it felt worthwhile to find ways to keep things fresh and find new inspiration. rice field.
“You know, 30 years later, we’ve been making Bounce Souls records in every way possible,” says Attonito. “So getting other people involved and bringing in their stories, or even the interesting dialogue required to create a song, has inspired us to give us a spark as opposed to the same old stuff.” rice field.”
It wasn’t just a way to do something new, it was a way to do something. For a band that’s been around for such a long time, there’s very little time for them to sit still. This forced timeout almost pushed us to the breaking point as a unit.
“It was the first time we were all faced with this thought – oh, we can’t just do what we love and how we make a living. We can’t do that,” says Attonito. . “It was so weird in itself. And we were even like, ‘Are we going to be a band? ‘” When will the band come back together? Or do you play music again? ’ We didn’t know. They were really weird.
Armed only with a belief in crowdwork and interviewing abilities, the band took to Zoom to introduce themselves to their fans. More specifically, the fan introduced himself to the band, and Attonite tried to recognize from the conversation the moments he could deploy throughout the story.
The first meeting that resulted in the song “Higher Ground” was attended by a guy from Vermont. Frank Turner After watching the livestream, I thought the Bouncing Soul Patreon ad was for Bouncing Soul Tequila.
He said, “Yeah, a few days before Thursday, I drank a little too much and was watching a Frank Turner livestream and saw this Bouncing Souls…looked like they were selling tequila.” The Patreon logo was a Patron bottle, but it said ‘Patreon,'” laughs Attonito. “So he said, ‘So I’m a little too drunk and for $100 I’ll get a bottle of Bouncing Souls Tequila. So I just clicked on it. It was our first one.’ So we’re like, “Oh dude, I hope you’re not disappointed about that.” i am so excited about it. Now we really think we have to deliver to this guy. That was the atmosphere. We really cared about it because we realized that these people had invested a good amount of money in this. ”

“On his version, the song starts, rings out, and Frank’s voice is like, ‘Oroit, let’s go!'” Attonito sings with Frank Turner’s best accent. “Frank actually uses his version, so his first one is like a gem. It was really fun.”
Turns out it was the first too. The lyrics open with lines about making what you have work, getting through tonight, and reaching higher ground. It’s an apt metaphor for when we thought the pandemic shutdown was only a few weeks away.
Other stories include a couple who met at Grindr, which fans called “a terrifying place,” prompting Attonito to start the song “Andy and Jackie,” which says, “I met you in a terrifying place.” .
The band shared plenty of laughs with fans experiencing their own version of pandemic cabin fever, but it wasn’t all loose and fun. Songs like “Vin and Casey” deal with fans remembering a deceased friend who introduced them to punk music and Bouncing Souls, now listening to Bouncing Souls and feeling connected to their friends. In their honor, the song once again features a friend of the band on vocals – 7 seconds vocalist Kevin Seconds.
Still, the band, armed with all this material, weren’t sure if this was going to be an album-worthy one. I enjoyed spending time with my fans again. It wasn’t until they sent some of the tracks to Yip to see what he thought.
“He came back and said, ‘This is definitely a record,'” recalls Attonito. “Let’s go in”
In the studio, guitarist Pete Steinkopf decided that the album needed a song to tie it all together, one that set the tone. It eventually became the title his track “Ten Stories High”. It acts like an overture to everything. This album is a journey through those stories where Bouncing Souls is the narrator and “Ten Stories High” is the theme his song that started it all.
10 stories high Sounds like a Bouncing Souls album. At this point, Bouncing Souls is a band that knows who they are. They aren’t afraid to step outside their punk rock comfort zone of distorted power chords and relatively simple chord progressions, but they aren’t looking to reinvent themselves.
So it’s now easier and faster to create songs than it was for Radiohead, for example. But they weren’t all easy. They hit creative roadblocks with songs like “Magnus Air Organ” and had to juggle various schedules while picking up songwriting slack for each other when needed to finish the song. bottom. “At some point you have to make a choice,” says Attonito. “When we recorded together [Descendents/ALL drummer] Bill Stevenson, he said something really fun. I always like to mention it. He said, “We always had very little time. This was the short time we were in the studio. Despite being their own project, they have kept their promises to their fans and stuck to them. There is no time to overthink things.
“You have to make a choice, and that’s where you go for it,” says Attonite.
They’ve kept that message in mind since the album’s completion, like when the opportunity presented itself to submit a song for a compilation, but the band ran out of time.
“We thought, ‘We can do it Patreon-ish,'” says Attonito. “So now it’s a new tool in our toolkit. I guess you could say.”
Not to make the Bouncing Souls guys look like old people learning Microsoft Office and Facebook at a community center. Nor do we say, “We have to deal with a pandemic.” If we could have recorded and toured like we’ve been doing since the early ’90s, it might not have happened otherwise.
