DLNR NEWS RELEASE – SYMPHONY OF THE HAWAIʻI FORESTS GROWS STUDENT PILINA IN TREE

(Honolulu) – Next month, the Hawaii Symphony Orchestra will host a special performance for students that interweaves music, art, science and storytelling. “Symphony of the Hawai’i Forests” is a collaboration with DLNR Department of Forestry and Wildlife (DOFAW), University of Hawaii at Manoa, Hālau ʻOhiʻa, and others, strengthening their pirina (relationship) with each other. forest and art.
“Symphony of the Hawai’i Forests” features newly created kaao (legendary tales) animations, hula, and orchestral performances accompanied by student artwork. The first performances will be on Thursday, April 20 and his Friday, April 21 at the Hawaii Theater Center with students from his 4th grade through her 12th grade on Oahu. Additional performances will be held through the Hawaii Symphony His Orchestra on the regular schedule.
“This project is a symphony in so many ways, not just musically,” said Dr. Takuma Ito, professor of music at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and project leader. “To make this possible, so many members of our community have come together to celebrate the Hawaiian forest musically, artistically, culturally, and scientifically, with students and people of all walks of life. I hope it resonates.”
With support from the U.S. Forest Service, Hawaii State Foundation for Arts and Culture, and DOFAW, the performances are free to all students, teachers and parents.
Dr. Heather McMillen, DOFAW’s Urban and Community Forester, said: “Habitat loss, drought, and wildfires are depleting native forests and trees in our neighborhoods, but forests are resilient. There are many things each of us can do to support them. “
Space is available for additional 4th through 12th grade classes. Teachers are encouraged to register and reserve a space on her Symphony of Hawai’i Forests website.
