Following the announcement of their return with first single “Mayhem,” Godsticks further reveal their expectations for the new album with second single “If I Don’t Take It All.”
Following their previous single “Mayhem”, “If I Don’t Take It All” sees the band incorporate electronic elements to add more texture to their signature identity. Exploring dynamics, the song moves deftly throughout its short running time, being both accessible and exploratory, serving as the perfect amuse bouche for the album.
The track was born as an indirect effect of the pandemic. Darran Charles has found himself immersed in television shows during this trying time to find a way to escape the void of his live performances. Accompanying the song is a new video from the band that brings that sense of struggle to life, Darran Charles details below.
“It’s about the struggles we all face every day and how we overcome them, even if they’re a little more dramatic and heartbreaking, like the show and the characters. was inspired by the more personal inner battles we all have to face at some point in our lives. It’s about perseverance, and each one of us tried to reflect that determination in our performance. “
The band also detailed a video for the new song.
“The video for ‘If I Don’t Take It All’ was shot in a very cool location tucked away in Cardiff Bay. It was very dark and claustrophobic at times, but I Our videographer was able to create this amazing prison atmosphere that perfectly captures the tone of the song.” Charles explains.
With the release of “If I Don’t Take It All”, the band also said goodbye to longtime member Dan Nelson.
“After 13 years in the band, I knew we needed to have an open conversation about what he wanted to do, but unfortunately he was reluctant to continue. remains a friend, so I don’t miss him, and I think he did his best all the way to the end, as you’ll see when ‘This Is What A Winner Looks Like’ comes out!”
With that in mind, the band now makes its video debut with a new single and welcomes new member Francis George, the band’s new bassist.
“Adding Francis to the band was a real no-brainer. Not only that, but I was able to play with a great sound and feel.I knew I had to invite him and I am very excited to have this new line-up out on tour this June. !”
album recording
With the release of “Inescapable” in February 2020, just a month before the world went into lockdown, the band had no way to show the audience their new song. It wasn’t until September 2021, when he was able to play tracks for a live audience, that the band, living in this stagnant world, began thinking about their next album.
“I couldn’t help but notice the creative tidal wave the pandemic has brought to the music industry. Every band and their dog were writing and releasing new music. It was a missing time.” Mention Charles.
Their love of songwriting and productivity was reignited just by being able to play live. Despite their newfound determination, the band remains humble yet incredibly driven. Experimenting with electronic sounds and delegating writing duties with the band made ‘This Is What A Winner Looks Like’ their most collaborative album to date.
Recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studios, the album was produced by James Lowry and mastered by Maor Appelbaum. The album’s striking cover artwork was created by Richard Beeching. “The band and I agreed that we needed a visually appealing sleeve to match the album’s strong title, but not too literal. We wanted the audience to like it. Something abstract enough to be interpretable. Our primates fit the bill nicely.”
