Bollywood music fans say they are canceling Spotify subscriptions after the streaming giant removed hundreds of popular songs from the platform.
Heartbroken fans of the Indian film genre opened up their playlists to find that Bollywood hits tracks like Bajirao Mastani and Baal Baal Dekoh were suddenly missing and shredded by the move. He said he noticed.
The streaming giant says it failed to strike a deal with India’s biggest film company for the rights to stream its music after a previous deal expired.
Some fans were outraged and took to social media to announce that they were suspending their premium membership (around £9.99 per month) in protest of the move.
The Bollywood film industry is worth billions of dollars and has fans all over the world.
On Twitter, one user @JagritiNadiger wrote, “Spotify just sorry. We’re not paying a premium to keep Bollywood songs out of our playlists.
@imaancipation added: “I can’t keep living like this, so Spotify has to agree to a deal Bollywood offers. Half of my playlists are greyed out.”

Spotify has licensing deals for every track it makes available to users, and the streaming giant apparently couldn’t get ink on paper with the people who own the rights.
The provider told BBC Newsbeat that they were unable to renew the song’s licensing agreement.
Iconically fan-branded movie songs, such as Zaalima from the 2017 film Raees, the 2018 Veere Di Wedding soundtrack, and the award-winning Gully Boy released in 2019, are currently unavailable.
This isn’t the first time Spotify has had trouble convincing licensees to share their music. In 2014, Taylor Swift deleted all her songs in a row while streaming.
Brand co-founder and CEO Daniel Ek convinced the Shake it Off singer to re-sign with Spotify after four years of negotiations.
